I love it!
Let's keep things rolling in the right direction. My preferred carry piece, Ruger LC9.

You need to have more confidence.
Please remind me if some thug is beating you down and I am anywhere
near by so I wont help you out and scare you or infringe on the poor
thugs rights to be a poor misunderstood thug.
Instead of pulling my gun and yikes, scaring you, I will just stand by
and offer words of encouragement and positive affirmations such as,
just hold on it will all be over soon, or your nose looks really cool
and macho hanging off the side of your face like that.

For the love of fucking God, in whatever form you recognize him/her/it/them/they, can we not start the firearms debate here too?

I believe that if we suddenly restricted ownership by law-abiding citizens today the mass of firearms would immediately begin shifting from them toward the "dark side". I have never heard of a reasonable plan to both reduce the overall mass of guns and assure that this doesn't happen.
I eagerly await your plan!

@Duck - reasonable questions. I'm going to respond using my experience from visiting and living in a lot of different countries that are usually referenced.
First point: I'm in Berlin for Christmas and I just drove here from a conference in Paris. When I crossed the border, I did so at motorway speeds and I didn't even have to slow down. So much for the long history of border security. It should also be noted that Germany has universal health care and free education, including university and job retraining. This economy is the foundation of Europe and it should be noted that the country was pounded into rubble only 67 years ago. A little bit of socialism isn't a dirty word around here.
Second point: Gun control and gun restriction are two different concepts. I've reached the point where I'm not for gun restriction as long as we have serious gun control. To quote a post I saw earlier today, "If the NRA ran the DMV, 40% of the drivers on the road would be unlicensed, and no special drivers license would be required for 18-wheelers or motorcycles." There is more, but I think that's enough to make the point. If we want to keep guns, controls are what we need.
Third point: What do we do about where we are now, with so many guns in circulation? Here's my 4-point plan:
1. All guns must be registered, no exceptions. Two-year amnesty period for everyone to turn in or register and keep their guns. No cost for original registration. Registration includes a background check consistent with acquiring a US Passport or Green Card. After the two years, possessing an unregistered gun becomes a felony so that criminals can be dealt with. No reason why a non-criminal would object to this.
2. Specialty weapon permits - like AR-15 - must be applied for based on need to have, operator license, and ability to store securely. A school with a gun safe that is alarmed to the police station and staff that have passed advanced weapons training might get a permit. Suburban warriors in Plano who have no need, no alarmed safe, and/or can't pass the proficiency test don't get a permit. Specialty permits are renewed each year. Change of address or change of staff require new approval. Possession of a specialty weapon without a permit is a felony and automatic jail. People who need assault weapons will be able to get them, and people who don't need them, won't be able to get them. People who possess them illegally will start going to jail. Over time, restricted weapons will disappear from the landscape.
3. No secondary market sales. All weapons are registered so all sales must be registered. Uncertified sales become a gun-trafficing felony. Gun owners are liable for crimes committed with a registered weapon that hasn't been reported stolen. Non-criminals won't have a problem with this and it will help shut down under-the-counter sales to criminals.
4. No concealed carry permits. No guns in the public community. Latest US data says (again) if you are engaged in a violent attack, you are 4.5 times more likely to be shot if you are carrying. It's the escalation thing. It isn't my opinion, it's data. If you want to debate this point, explain it with data.
So, that is my thinking on a plan. Under my plan, no weapons are banned, no weapons are automatically taken away, but you need to qualify for different grades of weapons. If you can't qualify mentally or physically, you don't need them or you shouldn't have them. I'd like to hear other input, unless you think the status quo is fine, in which case I question your intelligence so you probably shouldn't bother.

My take on your points:
1. Good point; I totally agree with this. They should all be registered, even if bought at a gun show or private sale. Hell, you transfer a license with a vehicle purchase, why not a gun? Maybe have a table at the DL Bureau or gun shows (have the gun show operators pay for the salary of the workers) just for that.
2. Disagree. People don't NEED an assault rifle...they just want one (the "cool" factor). I don't need my motorcycle; it's more of a hobby but the freedom of choice to acquire cool stuff legally and registered should not be restricted. BTW, I could do some serious damage to a crowd of people with it...if I were nuts :-)
Register the AK-47, be responsible with it, that's all.
3. See my opinion on Point #1
4. Disagree. Unenforceable. I wonder if your data takes in to account how many of those shot actually went thru a gun safety course or CHL class. Lust, don't go to Oklahoma; you're allowed to carry your weapon openly, visibly up there now. Which I don't agree with.
I mentioned Condition Yellow in an earlier post. Unfortunately, we should be thinking this way these days to prepare for pinheads with weapons.
Or, as Chris Rock once suggested, make it mandatory that all bullets cost $5,000 apiece :-0

Yes ladies and gentlemen we have another post by L4L
about how he would just love to give up the right to
defend himself, and would just love for you to do the same.

Bojulay,
I respect your right to your opinion, but disagree with your interpretation.
I have grown up with guns, support gun ownership, and do not want to see private rights curtailed any more than is reasonable...HOWEVER...even I believe that it's REASONABLE to make some changes to our culture.
We already have restrictions in types of weapons we can own, and I don't think many people have a problem with that. Fully automatic weapons and explosives, for instance, are restricted by regulations similar to what L4L is proposing above. While I think AR-15 type weapons are "cool" and I like to shoot them, I also recognize that they have great potential for modification to "full-auto" and have very large capacity magazines available, making them potentially "more lethal" than other designs. If you or I were to go crazy and hatch a plan to shoot up a place, we would be even crazier to NOT choose these weapons and several high capacity magazines.
L4L, yours is the first plan I've seen that sounds like someone has actually put some thought into, and I actually agree with most of it. One sticking point is that our legal system/jails are already so overcrowded that I can't imagine where we would put anymore "criminals" who would fall under your new laws for having unlicensed weapons. On the other hand, it's a start, and a decent model to begin discussions.
Thanks for the thoughtful response.
