I grew up on Tex-Mex here and have been going to these for a very long time and still are my favorites; Herrera's, El Fenix, Mia's, Ojedas, Los Lupes & Christina's.
And numerous small taco stands around town that are quite good.

Growing up on TexMex in FTW, my mom used to take me to the old "original" Mexican Inn
in downtown. They still have a few places around town. Their chips are like Fritos. Fantastic!
Oh yeah, they have the best pralines around!

Selot it would be great if you would start a poll.
It seems obvious Joe T's in Ft. Worth is the winner and Uncle Julio's in North Dallas would be the winner.
In my opinion Joe T's is much better when you can eat out on the patio. Kinda cool outside now. Uncle Julio's is good but a little expensive and far for Ft. Worth folks.
Los Lupes is a quaint but good sized, family owned restaurant at 183 and Beltline (actually Harvard) in Irving. It is convenient for both Dallas and Ft. Worth, the food is reasonable and in good portions, good table-side Guac, queso, salsa, table set-up is easy to be re-configured for a large bunch. Good service and nice people. It has a comfortable setting and not too bright inside. It's not real fancy but is comfortable. Other thoughts before we vote?
Other "tweeners"...
Pappasitos on Northwest Highway and 35
Uncle Julios in Grapevine on 114 and William D. Tate

Selot is narrowing down the suggestions to a resonable number for a poll. I suggested eight. Now's the time for any last minute suggestions to get your favorite into the polling.
We could even consider doing it by location...
i.e. Uptown/Downtown, North Dallas, Mid-cities, Ft.Worth to narrow it down and then just pick one or re-poll. Some lucky restaurant is going to have a very profitable night.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Abuelo's yet. It's a chain and not from super-awesome-kewl California, but has a pretty damn tasty menu IMHO. They have great standard Tex Mex fare, but I was very impressed with the sour cream shrimp enchiladas. Ay Caramba!

The Mexican Inn on 8th Avenue is good, but I have to agree that the Lancaster one is a bit better. Just getting out of the car in the parking area and getting a whiff of what is to come... whew... wish I was there now.
Out of state company here this weekend...she requested Joe T's again for tomorrow night.

I once trapped a 4" roach with an ashtray at Primos. Fun times.

Seems like there's lots of advice here, so i wasn't going to add anything until DFWTraveler went off. Don't you hate it when outsiders come here and bitch?
Does he really think he speaks for the Mexican race?
I mean really, if you don't like it here or think "it's all crap" then leave. We loved Texas when you weren't here and don't see you as being an improvement.
As for real Mexican or Tex-Mex. there are several places in Ft Worth on Main street south of Exchange.
Yes Joe T's is there, but also http://www.elasadero.com/ , and already mentioned... http://www.laplayamaya.com/LaPlayaMa...0/Default.aspx

Not a big fan of most TexMex as it is way too bland for my tastes. My 2 years in El Paso renewed my vigor for that type of mexican food (more like SoCal there in El Paso and Cuidad Juarez).
I enjoy Mercardo Juarez for the food and enjoy Joe T's simply for the atmosphere. The best place I have found for the taste I enjoy is a small hole in the wall next to Grapevine High School on 26 & Mustang. Former gas station that has all my favorites.
