Carrying a concealed weapon isn't just about defending yourself but one could find himself in a situation to defend others as well.

Thank you!! But be careful on your last statement. I personally do not want someone with a concealed handgun to feel obligated to defending me. For instance, if I am being held up at gunpoint by some guy, I don't want some do-gooder with a gun thinking he has to come to my rescue.

Yet people on this forum keep coming up with news clippings and TV reports of just that -- people saving their lives with a gun in the house. I personally believe both sides are getting equal treatment by the news media.

To answer Speedracer I do pack in the house. I carry my CCW peace, a P229 and one extra mag. It only comes off when hobbying or when I shower. I do leave it within reach in the shower (I live in the hood). The rest of my firearms are locked in safes where they belong. Same for the ammo it is locked away as well.
That being said a firearm will do you no good unless you get proper training. When the shit hits fan everything you do will go back to your training. If you don't train you are a dead person. It is amazing what happens in a fight too. I hope nobody has to go through one, but you get tunnel vision, motor skills drop and time just seems to stop.
As for the 5 yr old. That is a horrible tragedy. I know people have already made up their minds on this and no matter what I say will change that. It was beyond stupid to give a loaded gun to a 5 yr old. Kids need constant supervision. That rifle should have been in the safe locked away.

My ECCIE Reviews

I know, I'm late.
But those parents need to put in jail for letting their kid handle a weapon unsupervised. Why anyone would get a child a gun is beyond me, but children should be taught extensively about the safety and care of a gun before ever receiving one personally. And then that child's guns should be locked up along with the other guns unless they are using them for a specific reason.

Sorry you feel that way. Keep in mind though, that scenario you described the victim often loses more than just his wallet. Actually what I was referring to was an active shooter in a public place.

Be very careful Speedie, can you imagine the police having to get an affirmative from you in order to arrest someone or shoot them. In fact that was the result of a 20 year old court case. 911 was called and the police arrived on the scene. The door was ajar. The police knocked a few times and no one answered. The police left. The woman inside was repeatedly raped and brutalized AFTER they left. She sued and the court decided that the police had NO obligation to the individual but to the community for stopping crime. So accordingly, if you are in the process of being a victim of a crime then you had better hope for a concealed carry person nearby (not that there is any evidence of anyone in this story being a qualified concealed carry owner).

You can forget about it. Just like you've forgotten about those 20 dead 6 year olds. Be proud. Morons.

Tim, you forgot about the 6 million jews that Hitler killed because of no guns to defend themselves.

Makes sense to me. Anyone who knowingly or negligently makes a weapon available to an unqualified or illegal user should face the same charges as the perpetrator would face. In this case, if the parents were responsible for securing the firearm, and did not, they should be facing manslaughter charges.

Careful COG, there are thousands of veterans out there whom our lawmakers don't think are qualified to either own a gun or carry a gun for self defence. It depends on your (really theirs) definition of what qualified is. As for illegal, the US government breakes the law everyday don't they. You have to be 21 years old to buy a handgun but the military hands a pistol, rifle, or machine gun (much less grenades) to men and women who yet to turn 19 years old. Kind of depends on whose definition of what legal is.

I in no way was talking about the police. They have had many hours of training in such circumstances. The average citizen with a concealed handgun license has little understanding of what to do and how to do it when encountering such a situation. I do remember having a forum discussion with a guy from Houston who was a very conscientious concealed carry owner, and he said that he would interfere in such a situation under VERY limited conditions. Too easy to spook the bad guy into pulling the trigger when he wouldn't do so otherwise.

I have a concealed handgun permit and have been around guns my entire life. During my lifetime, I have used and depended upon guns for both personal defense and/or survival. I am also an avid, lifelong hunter. With all of that said, I would hate to live with the burden of knowing that I gave my 5 year old son a gun for a present (which I would never have done in the first place) and left the gun loaded. Knowing full well that the 5 year old will eventually do what any 5 year old will do. He's going to pull the trigger. Thus killing his 2 year old sister!
That is what I would call a serious (perhaps even criminal) case of parental neglect!
Absolutely shameful!

And you're saying when Hitler's storm troopers came to round up the Jews, if they had been armed they wouldn't have just been gunned down in the ghettos?
It would have saved Hitler all the money he spent on gas chambers, but it would have also been merciful for the Jews because they wouldn't have been gassed or died of starvation or overwork, or been used as human guinea pigs.
