To answer your question - yes. In the BDSM realm, you typically never find sadism & masochsim not lumped together. The primary reason for that is one of consent. If you are being sadistic to another person and they did not choose to undergo that, then you are not being a lifestyle player. You are being a criminal who is breaking the law by assaulting someone else. Although the reverse is not true, as I've never heard of a masochist being arrested for being hurt. Ah, the vagaries of the law...

The S&M monikers generally tend to be applied with a wide brush, though not quite as wide as BDSM. S&M typically (at least for those who are in the lifestyle) is used to address the heavier play and players, while the BD (bondage & discipline) is targeted towards players on the less intense end of the spectrum. Not that the descriptors are always correct or appropriately applied. But it's a generally accepted rule-of-thumb.

It's alright in this arena to bump old threads. The "no bumping threads that are over 30 days old" are used mostly for reviews and topics that are more inclined towards stirring up old issues or topics that aren't pertinent for whatever reason.
