The Blackhawks were in the CHL. Not even triple A hockey. Same league as Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, Wichita and Odessa play in now. Dallasnever deserved the NHL franchise. It should have come to Houston, where the WHA Aeros routinely outdrew the Rockets in the Summit and on the road. Because of the failures of the NHL in Oakland (Golden Seals) and Atlanta (Flames), the league decided to fuck Houston when it absorbed the old WHA -- Winnipeg, Quebec, Edmonton and New England. Only Edmonton remains in its original city. They told the Houston organization they'd give them the franchise if they sold 9700 season tickets. They sold 9550. NHL fucked them. Dallas should have been called the Texas Lone Stars. Another massive marketing fuckup. Could have played home games all over the state.

Name me three players from SMUs tradition in the 60s. In fact, name me one. I remember Ira Terrell from the 70s -- might have been the first African American allowed in Highland Park without a lawnmower, and a pretty good 6-7 1/7 forward -- but SMU was a non entity. Their sports were golf and tennis -- big surprise! They did develop a football program in the late 70s, early 80s and wound up being the only NCAA school ever to receive the Death Penalty.

Methinks you're speaking of childhood memories, not much in the way of fact at all. Kinda like meeting the one and only Santa Claus at Sanger-Harris in the early 60s. Or Bugs Bunny at Six Flags.

The Mavs sold out when they opened Reunion. They sold out again when they opened AA Arena. That was the result of excellent local marketing to corporate ticket buyers. Not because the team had captured the hearts of the local community.

The Dallas Blackhawks did not play in the NHL, Adams Division. They played in the CHL. Further, neither Minnesota (NORTH Stars) nor Chicago Blackhawks (Dallas parent team) were in the Adams Division at the time of the Dallas Blackhawks.

Minor league hockey isn't exactly a huge following and after they got cut in 82, we didn't see hockey back in Dallas till 92.

I meant the Blackhawks won the Adams Cup, which was the championship trophy of the old CHL. The games were generally well attended, but like a lot of minor league sports franchises, they could easily fold. They lasted 13 years in Dallas and the franchises longevity was one reason the NHL decided to award a franchise to Dallas. As far as I know, the Dallas Stars have enjoyed tremendous popularity and attendance.

Honestly, I can't name a single SMU bb player from the 60s. I can only name one SMU football player from the same time period. However, if you were going to follow bb in Dallas, the Mustangs at Moody Coliseum, which was the best bb stadium at the time was team to follow. Understandably, this may not qualify as a tradition in your book.

Sorry, your recollection is wrong, Dallas was crazy for an NBA franchise and the games were all well attended despite a very crappy starting product. It wasn't some miracle marketing gimmick. Now the Dallas Diamonds are another story.

As a longtime Mav Fan I have high hopes. I love the old pros on this team who know it is their last chance, and that they are playing a team with stars like Wade and James in their prime. Kidd, Marion, and even Terry, are in their twilight years, but refuse to quit trying. And Dirk wants it bad, especially after the previous Miami officiating fiasco that gave them the championship.

OK, Adams Cup it is! Shoulda said that; not league, division, apples, etc. I do remember the Blackhawks... they played the old CHL Apollos back in the 60s...when they had chain link fence instead of glass along the boards.

Chit, I'm a lifelong Houston fan. There is nothing more frustrating/frustrated. But it does make you a student of sports.

THE NHL DID NOT AWARD A FRANCHISE TO DALLAS. The Minnesota North Stars MOVED there after they went broke in Minn., 11 years after the Blackhawks folded, along with the Fort Worth Wings (always a bigger, rowdier crowd as I recall) and the Oklahoma City Blazers. It required league approval, of course, but it was not a new team by any stretch of the imagination and I seriously doubt the success of the Blackhawks is why they moved them to Dallas. What kind of poppycock is that? There were numerous cities with higher level minor league franchises (AHL, IHL) that did much better at the boxoffice than anybody ever did in Dallas. I think the Laredo Bucks drew more per game during their CHL championship runs than the Blackhawks ever did during their Adams Cup championship seasons.

And, yes, I am still bitter about Dallas getting the NHL franchise instead of Houston. You're right about that. The Houston Aeros outdrew the Rockets in The Summit and still got fucked by the NHL because teams "south of the Mason Dixon Line" would never succeed. Atlanta just lost another NHL franchise, if you've been keeping up.

But this little debate is about hoops, not hockey. IMHO Dallas has always been a one-sport town. In fact, most of Texas is that way. More if the weather is better.

I'm pulling for Dallas in basketball. Imagine how they'd draw if the Cowboys were playing!
