He wasn't in Yemen because the US killed his father. He was ALREADY in Yemen when the drone got the father.

The son left Sana on September 15th to "search for" the father. The father got killed on September 30th. So the son was in Yemen at least 2 weeks beforehand. It isn't clear from the article exactly when he got to Yemen, but maybe he was there all summer. In September, he should have been back in school in Denver. Maybe the reason he was still there was because he wasn't ever coming home.
