Mallet was a fucking head case. He kept it under control on the sidelines under Belichick but when he became the guy he couldn't handle it.
Hoyer is a shit QB. Always was. He progressed under BoB but fell flat on his face in crunch time.
I don't think those two are accurate reflections on BoB's ability to judge a QB's ability. They are what he had available to him. Along with 5 or 6 other QBs that he went 18-14 and won a division title with. What could he have done if he had a healthy, stable QB that would have allowed him to game plan to exploit opponents weaknesses rather than have to come up with a different plan seemingly every week to fit a new QB's abilities?
IMO BoB did a helluva job with a pile of shit. He needs a chance to run his offense with a good QB before we condemn him as a bad coach.
Hackenberg was clearly uncomfortable in the spread offense. He lost his best receiver and his offensive line was throwing too many lookout blocks.
His arm strength is unquestioned. He can make all the throws and even do it off balance and on the move. His footwork on drops is nearly perfect. He is a prototypical Pro-Style QB that was made to run a spread offense. He showed maturity, leadership and personal poise in a bad situation at Penn State.
Where he lacks is poise in a collapsing pocket. Gun shy perhaps? He was sacked over 100 times in three years. Most of those in the last two. That shouldn't be happening in a spread offense so there were other breakdowns besides his. He hasn't had to read the whole field in the spread so whether he can work through progressions or even make the critical pre and post snap reads based on the entire defense rather than one side of a defensive line is in question, rightfully so but the same can be said about Goff and Lynch Hackenberg at least had a year of exposure to it.
With a decent receiver and a good offensive line Hackenberg lived up to his hype working under BoB's offense throwing for nearly 3000 yards, 20 touchdowns and only a handful of INT's his freshman year.
Now it may sound like I'm high on Hackenberg, I'm not really. I just think The Texans could do worse than Hackenberg considering what their choices will end up being.
They aren't getting Goff or Wentz. The cost is too high. No point in breaking them down.
Lynch has dropped and may be attainable but there are questions about his health. He's shown some inconsistencies sometimes looking really good but sometimes sucking and looking completely mediocre when defenses attacked his strength and shut down the short passes and screens and forced him to throw deeper routes. He'll need some time to acclimate to a pro-style offense, develop the 3-5 & 7 step drops required while scanning the field.
Connor Cook seems to be another Ryan Mallett head case. He may have the most physical and on field potential of any of the QB prospects but character questions abound. The Texans will stay away from him.
Dak Prescott is one that has had his name thrown around Houston since the combine. It seems like it's all upside with him. Toughness, both mentally and physically. He sees the entire field and knows how to adjusts quickly he just doesn't always do it. He has a strong enough arm to make the throws but good foot quickness too and seems to know when to use each. He apparently looks off defenders well at times but telegraphs his throws at others.
He needs to improve accuracy on the move or off balance and learn to throw receivers open. He also will need to learn the pre and post snap reads and adjust. One of his biggest knocks is pre-determining his throws and sticking with it even when it breaks down.
Prescott will be a work in progress and not likely able to start the season. Out of the 3 prospects that the Texans might take only Hackenberg has a possibility to be able to start immediately. The Texans have a project so unless they are ready to move on from Savage or he has improved to starter consideration Prescott doesn't really fill a roster position here.
Beyond that it's free agency and it don't look good.
Here's the most current list of FAs

Osweiler is the only guy that intrigues me but he hasn't done anything to warrant what he seems to think he is worth. He want's to get paid on what his potential is. Hell, me too! They are going to have to overpay to get him and I don't think they'll do it. Which means they have to draft a starter, plug in Savage or Tebow help us, Brandon Weeden gets the job...or they pick up some guy that gets cut from another roster. It ain't looking good.
BTW if Osweiler leaves Denver that might be a good fit for RG3. Kubiak would love having him run those bootlegs a few times a game.
