Wait til the IRS ramps up for compliance with Obamacare; 35,000 new IRS agents.

You think the IRS won't expand their authority? Think again.

This law isn't preventing taxcheats from running off to other countries; a $50,000 deminimus is nothing; it is targeted at almost anybody who runs up against the IRS.

In addition, the IRS has powers to place liens on all assets - real property, fixtures, inventory, accounts, etc. So they don't need the travel restriction to enforce payment. It is just another example of the Feds grabing power at the expense of individual freedom.

If there is a judical proceeding that results in a travel ban fine. At least a judge was involved; and the individual had counsel and appeal rights.

What I have a problem with is the possibility that the IRS, merely pursuant to "assessing a levy" for an amount they say you owe, can advise the passport office (or anyone else) that your travel privileges should be suspended. They can "assess a levy" even if they are completely wrong and unwilling to take the matter to Tax Court, as I found out from personal experience.

At the very least, I think the language in any possible legislation should be tightened up in such a manner that no one should have any concerns about these issues. Judging from the article timpage linked, I don't have much confidence that that's likely to be the case.

Of course, a lot of the crap shoveled out today is written in such a way that nobody has any idea what the hell it says. Just look at Dodd-Frank, for example.
If we had a simple, understandable tax code, this wouldn't be necessary. Tax regulations take up over 700,000 pages in the CFR. It's insane, and yet there are people, including some on this board, that actually defend that monstrosity. It has to go. It is an affront against freedom, and morality.

Hear, hear!

Our tax code is simply a national embarrassment. It's hard for me to believe anyone would try to claim otherwise.

We need a tax system that looks like it was designed on purpose, not something that was a monstrosity to begin with and then got junked up with more and more crap every year for decades.

So what? No jury duty and no voting. No one like jury duty and voter turnout is abysmal. No biggee.
