Ground invasion wasn't necessary, Japan was defeated would have capitulated with additional strategic conventional bombing. Using nukes was barbaric and it's a stain on American history. "Millions of American lives would have been lost in an unavoidable ground invasion" is a damnable myth.

Ending the war wasn't something the Japanese could vote on. What if the Emperor waited until 99% of Japanese were dead?

He was a war criminal by his contemporary standards as well. He simply had no regard for the lives of humans who didn't wear his team's colors. In time he will be reclassified with history's abominable psychopaths.

[QUOTE=Marshall;1830207]Ummmm.....bigmex, we did find WMD, we just didn't find stockpiles of WMD (with the exception of yellowcake)
Did you read the article past the opening sentence?
"Israeli warplanes bombed a reactor project at the site in 1981. Later, U.N. inspectors documented and safeguarded the yellowcake, which had been stored in aging drums and containers since before the 1991 Gulf War. There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said."
Saddam had NO secrets. We learned NOTHING new and discovered zero imminent threats. He was a boogeyman puffed up to dupe Americans into supporting a wasteful war.

You are the one perpetuating the myth. The estimate was there would be 1M Allied casualties - wounded and dead. That estimate was derived from campaign experience in the Pacific Theater. Furthermore, intelligence garnered from Japanese radio intercepts up to Hiroshima do not support your contention that the Japanese were ready to capitulate.

If we had not dropped the Bombs, and were forced to invade

Forced, forced! Japan was a smoldering wreck. We had burned their cities to the ground and roasted alive 100s of thousands of their citizens. They were starving, undermanned, broken and no longer held any foreign territory.
We did not take the high ground and seek peace once their ability to threaten anyone had been taken away.
We chose to deploy a weapon that indiscriminately killed women and children on a massive scale, poisoned the air, water and earth, and created unique and horrible human misery. Not something to be proud of.

Once again: Too many, like yourself, would rather just claim: “Bush lied.” Yet, that is the real intellectual dishonesty.
The absence of substantial intelligence indicates one of two possibilities: 1) nothing is going on, or 2) the enemy is really good at hiding what is going on. Hence, the WMD Commission and the Butler report both indicate that the intelligence community was correct in suggesting that Saddam was probably seeking to re-arm his military forces with WMD. That conclusion is, in part, based on these known facts: 1) Saddam had had WMD in the past. 2) Saddam had strong incentives to reconstitute his arsenal. 3) He had the money to refinance such a reconstitution. 4) He had trained, competent technicians who could reconstitute his stockpile of WMDs. 5) He had the necessary materiel on hand to proceed with such a reconstitution. 6) He repeatedly stalled and deceived the inspectors—which begged the question—“What is he hiding?”

"The estimate"
This came straight from God, right?
That "estimate" has always and only been cited by the perpetrators and apologists of the nuclear holocaust, as with the idea that there was no alternative but to invade.
The Japanese had NOTHING. They were vanquished except for a very small percentage of fighting age men, with no oil, armed with knives and sticks, with empty bellies and starving families.
There were alternatives to using the bomb other than ground invasion. They were eating bugs. Simple siege and an offer of rice would have garnered a surrender in a few months. Simply saying "we'll let Russia annex the rest of your northern islands" probably would have done it.

Whether they are defending the Soviet Union or bleating for Saddam Hussein, liberals are always against America. They are either traitors or idiots, and on the matter of America’s self-preservation, the difference is irrelevant.-Ann Coulter

Isolated Japanese soldiers in the Philippines continued to wage war against the Filipinos until 1974. Yeah! They were ready to surrender. Bushido Code: No Surrender!

While this turd says the US is immoral for dropping the bomb, why doesn't he say the US is immoral for the poor education liberals give our children, or the US is immoral for making the underclass dependent upon government so liberals can buy their votes.....
