So who's better? Sure, other countries do some things better than we do, but on the whole, there is no greater nation on earth, and there hasn't been for a good many years.
1) The United States of America has the longest-lived form of government in the world. No dictatorship, monarchy, republic, democracy, or whatever else has been around uninterrupted and relatively unchanged for as long as we have.
2) When there is a natural disaster anywhere on the globe, who do nations turn to before us? What nation is first to jump in with offers of aid before us?
3) In all the history of the world, only twice has anyone offered to die for you or other innocent people, regardless of where in the world you live: Jesus Christ, and any member of the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
4) We haven't been always united. Hell, we're not united on much of anything these days. But that's our history. There were significant factions opposed to nearly every foreign and domestic problem we ever faced, from the often vitriolic debates during the Continental Congress to the Isolationists who tried to keep us out of both World Wars. But since the ratification of our present Constitution, through our own Civil War and the Civil Rights movement, we as a nation persevered and survived despite our differences, because on the great moral questions, we are united more often than not.
5) If you don't like it here, there are options. North Korea has lots of undeveloped coastline. There is much unimproved land to be had in Siberia. You can homestead in the Outback for free. There are no taxes on homes in the jungles along the Amazon. You can always find your own Pitcairn Island. Several African nations change governments every other year and I'm sure they would all welcome the wisdom of your expertise.
6) Whatever you, I, or anyone else on this forum thinks, there are outside indicators that this IS the greatest country in the world, and they can't be ignored. Consider: what's the ratio of people trying to get in versus people trying to get out? How many other nations hesitate to act until they know what we're going to do? Hell, where is the United Nations headquartered?
7) Before you go slamming the United States of America, consider where the world might be without us. All of the oil in the Middle East might be under the control of Saddam Hussein. Every nation of consequence in Europe might be flying the Swastika...or the Hammer and Sickle. The entire South Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand, would rise in the morning and retire in the evening saluting the Rising Sun. Great Britain, if it still existed at all, would be a toothless lion. All of these things could easily have come to pass but for the United States of America.
8) More proof that we STILL ARE the greatest: we know that there remain nations with imperial ambitions. India has looked with longing at all of the land available in Austrailia. India and Pakistan, China and Russia, Greece and Turkey, and others, have had border skirmishes involving division-sized formations for the better part of a century. Any number of African leaders covet the scant resources in neighboring countries. What do you suppose keeps them in check? What do you think keeps them from full-scale war? I'll tell you what: WE DO. The military might of the United States of America, and the threat and the fear that we will use it. Because one-on-one, no country on earth, and few alliances, could stand against us, and they all know it.
9) The world's policeman? DAMN RIGHT! And for three very good reasons:
A. Because someone has to do it.
B. Because it's the right thing to do.
C. Because we can.
Patriotic and Proud of It.

Have you ever visited Switzerland or Austria, for starters? Not only are they picturesque and wealthy, they aren't stupid enough to bankrupt themselves solving the world's problems when no one wants their nose in it anyway.
All those great things done in World War II were done by a completely different United States than we have today. The America of 60 years ago was great, the America of today is an aging widow living on inherited property that is heavily mortgaged.
No one can stand up to our military now, because we have massively more resources. Who knows what will happen in 25 years when our potential foes are equally equipped and don't have a bunch of gay men led by women like we do going into battle against us? They might just kick our ass and then what are we going to do? What are you idiots who supported women in combat going to do when they are being raped by enemy combatants and tortured in prison?

First, who said I supported women in combat?
Second, you think men aren't raped and tortured during a war? If you believe that, you have either a terrible memory or you should turn in your yarmulke.
Third, you gotta lotta nerve trashing this country when the only reason that your people exist at all is because of this country. Or have you forgotten Auschwitz, Treblinka, and all the other camps? No, that's unfair of me; NO ONE has forgotten. You've just become ungrateful. As long as we AMERICANS are doing something you approve of, then we're a great nation. But when we stray from the approved path of the Jewish Lawyer, we're no longer great? Grow up, pal. Great nations remain great because of their diversity, not in spite of it.
And the last time I checked, there aren't a whole lot of beaches in Austria or Switzerland. Lots of money in Switzerland, though. IJS.

Poet, sorry, but you are spouting nationalist bullshit, not patriotism. You try to excuse the destruction of freedom today by what America used to be. When did we last fight a war to help others? 1945? Our present day wars are to protect oil interests and fund the defense industry. We aren't "helping" anyone. World policeman? What gives us the right to tell other countries what they can and cannot do? Especially when we are doing much the same thing ourselves?
Sorry, Poet. America is a great country, but we now have one of the most corrupt and dishonest governments in the world. We let it get that way, and the "America: Right or Wrong" nationalist tripe isn't helping. True patriotism recognizes what is going wrong, and seeks to fix it.

Now? Whiny, are you saying the America of past presidents, like Bush, Reagan and Nixon weren't corrupt and dishonest?

+1. I was going to respond to poet (e.g US didn't do it all alone, humility needs to be nurtured especially amongst the strong etc.) but I didn't respond as they were obvious comments which anybody with a brain cell would have already understood.
Notwithstanding that, if I could, I would emigrate to the US (you have no idea how bad the weather has been over here since the start of March - I mean March 2008). Second greatest nation.

PL, I agree with the majority of what your post attempts to convey. We have much to be proud of as a country. However, your first statement is somewhat disturbing. If we are at a point as a nation where our best defense is to ask "Who's better?", then the bar has indeed been lowered.
The question should never be "Who's better?", but rather "Are we the best we can be?".

Who really cares about all this subjective BS?
"We're the best!"
"No the Swiss are"
"Are we the best we can be?"
"We can be better!"
