Now this is a very interesting thread if you remove the vitriol and name calling but it would seem that is impossible. Some very good opinions as to "why" the civil war started. Lincoln's opinions and actions. All very interesting but let me get back to the OP's opinion.
Should Trump take this stand, that bases should not be re-named? From a purely political view, the majority says no, not because they want to give into the mob, I certainly don't and yes, sometimes Conservatives get tired of "giving in" but you have to pick your fights with politics in mind whether you like it or not, at least that is my opinion.
This is not a stand Trump should make. I'm not even going to bother with polling, I think I know it already and with the Republican leader of the Senate and many other Republicans taking the stand that this isn't a fight Trump should pick, holly crap, you don't need to be a political science major to see that this fight is not worth it when there are Soooooo many other things to take a stand on like law and order.
I happen to think that statues of Confederate Generals belong in museums but they should be taken down only if the elected officials with the authority to do so, no matter their reason to do so, vote yes. End of discussion but under no circumstances should a city council, city police, Mayor, Governor, allow a mob to tear down a statue while they stand there and watch because they are afraid they might hurt somebody "breaking the law" and the political ramifications of doing so. There is no other decision to make other than stop law breakers by any means necessary. Persuasion comes first then action if necessary.
We can argue all day whether cops should get rough with peaceful protesters like the guy I saw berating a cop, right in his face, with no mask on by the way and I'm asking myself "why don't you push this fool out of your face"? You don't have to hit him with the night stick but damn, shove his ass back and tell him to maintain some distance or he will be arrested. While you may have the right to yell at a cop, you don't have the right IMHO, to do it nose to nose especially during this pandemic.
I know, it pisses me off too to give in to any demands made by BLM but when a clear majority of Americans believe something and I think a clear majority see no reason to fight this battle on bases or statues, then you pick another battle to fight when the numbers are more on your side like law and order which clearly the majority of American do agree with though you couldn't tell it by watching the nightly news.
One thing must be made clear though, there is a big difference between some of the people Black and White protesting under a BLM banner and the leaders of BLM who are on tape, on the record as having Marxist ideology. OEB and I and others and this gentleman are trying to tell people that if you are donating to BLM like Nike, Ford and all the Tech companies, you are donating to a group that believes in Marxism and will try to change this country to Marxism. Now maybe the average dumb ass people we see on the news don't know and understand this meaning but holy crap, Pelosi, Shumer and the other Democrats don't understand what giving in to Marxist ideology can lead to? Maybe they do but winning this election is all they are thinking about now and to call out BLM for what they are will only cause a riff in the party. Maybe they think that after they have power back, they will be able to control these Marxist. Have they no understanding of History? Oh, that guy Adolf, nobody is going to buy that, he'll fizzle out if we just ignore him". How well did that work out? We ignore Marxist, fail to call them what they are not merely the leaders of BLM but the Marxist leaders of BLM. This is a distinction that must be made and giving Marxist hundreds of millions of dollars for their cause, could be our downfall.
