Reading multiple works of his is the only real way to catch some of the nuances of his stories; he references his other works either by common characters, places, stories, etc. You would not get that if you didn't read at least a few of his stories.

The good thing is many of them have been adapted into cinematic form so if you like the films the stories are even better. Everyone knows that he wrote It, The Stand, Christine, Salem's Lot (one of my personal favs) and Carrie; on the other hand people don't immediately think of him when they think of Shawshank Redemption, Stand by Me, and the Green Mile, all of which he wrote.

The Dark Tower was his opus, definitely one of his most tedious efforts. It was the skeleton of an unfinished transcript that he never forgot about and when time came, he breathed life into.

In essence, give it a try! I think you'll like it.

Shawshank and Green Mile... Oh some do! Excellent books and flicks. His horror books have been much harder to translate to film.

I actually thought that 'The Mist' adaptation was very under-appreciated. I liked it quite a bit. Eerie-scary and quite depressing.

Yeah, that's exactly what I heard about the Dark Tower. For me, I'd want to do it proper justice so I would feel compelled to read his other stuff first before starting on the Dark Tower.

It's a daunting endeavor that depresses me every time I consider reading the Dark Tower, heh.

On another note, my buddy and I were talking about Man of Steel the other day.

We're both hoping to see Luthor in the movie helping the government develop weapons against Zod, then get injured in a battle between Supes & Zod. Post-credits scene, you see Luthor with his hair falling out laughing maniacally.
