15 July 1916: A cavalry charge on the Somme by the 20th Deccan Horse and 7th Dragoon Guards eloquently described by an eyewitness:
"It was an incredible sight, an unbelievable sight, they galloped up with their lances and with pennants flying, up the slope to High Wood and straight into it. Of course they were falling all the way ... I've never seen anything like it! They simply galloped on through all that and horses and men dropping on the ground, with no hope against the machine-guns, because the Germans up on the ridge were firing down into the valley where the soldiers were. It was an absolute rout. A magnificent sight. Tragic." 2nd Lieutenant F.W. Beadle, Royal Artillery.

Not to hijack this thread, but at the beginning of WW-2, when Hitler invaded Poland, the Polish military leaders actually sent battalions of horse cavalry to meet the onslaught of the German Panzers.
They were annihilated.

That horrible event is recounted in Thousand Hour Day by W.S. Kuniczak (1967).

They are advertising a new series about WW-1 that is supposed to be shown soon. It looks like a good, colorized series that I've seen on the Smithsonian channel before. Might keep your eyes on the AHC channel for when it will be starting.
