I don’t believe that the authors of the russians disinformation letter had any idea that the government had the laptop. I think that if they did they would have been brought before the congress to swear under oath whether they knew or not.

I also believe that the FBI decided to say “no comment” when questioned because they didn’t want to be seen as influencing the election.

Nobody lied they just didn’t confirm. I believe that there was a number of reasons not to mostly to avoid having to confirm or deny everything that someone published about the laptop. By confirming it’s existence they would give disinformation actors the very opportunity to spread disinformation that they didn’t want on social media.

The only reason conspiracy nuts are pissed about this is that they didn’t have the option to use such salacious material in an effort to cause the President and his family pain and suffering. As well as fill their coffers with social media money.
