What do they expect to learn from his returns? If there were irregularities, the IRS would be all over it. All they really want is to make some work for a lot of lawyers and CPA's to dig up little arcane bits of information so they can cloud the real issues of the campaign with minutiae.

I think Romney should release his information, but I fully understand why he doesn't. It will only serve to distract.

He's not hiding anything. If he was, the IRS would would find it, prosecute, and we'd all know.

http://thinkprogress.org/election/20...f-tax-returns/

The above link is to a democrat effort to make it a legal requirement to release tax returns if you wish to become president. Personally I think that this, if passed, will come back to bite them in the ass like Ted Kennedy changing MA law to prevent Romney from appointing a replacement Senator if Kerry was elected president. However, the point is that there is no current law that requires them to be released. Furthermore, releasing them or not, doesn't make him a better or worse candidate for President.

This country is up against the ropes in a tag team bought for the world tag team wrestling championship... Tthe choice we have is to continue to use the same guy who is currently losing or tag in someone else who has nothing in his record to show that he can be the guy to turn the tide of the bought... Really this comes down to which guy will be able to keep the fight going for 4 more years in the hopes that we will not be pinned and counted out before the next guy becomes available to be tagged in.

its a viscious cycle of pure partisan bullshit that will continue until one party or the other forces this country into total demise ... sooner or later it wont be because we have a choice to make it will be because we have no more choices left to make ...

CJ7 I think that is by far the best post I have ever seen of yours.

I could not agree with this more!

I can only hope for the sake of my children that we have not reached that point yet.

contrary to (inane) popular belief Im not some far leftwing freakshow, nor am I some far rightwing knuckledragger ... I didnt vote for Obie and wont, and Romney isnt even worth a consideration.

blind partisanship is and will be the end of the road, and not one single person will have the right to bitch when we are forced into little things like 50% tax rates and everything that goes with them.

As the ancient philosopher, Woody Allen, said:

More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.

We all know that Governor Perry had his famous "OOPS Moment" shortly after entering the Republican primary. We also know that Governor Goodhair never recovered!

Will this be Mitt's "OOPS Moment?" Stay tuned!

Do Americans care about (Mitt's) tax returns?

From a new Public Policy Polling survey:
Q12. Do you think Mitt Romney should release his tax returns for the last 12 years, or not?
He should........................ .............................. 56%
He should not........................... .....................34%
Not sure.......................... .............................. 10%
Among independents, it's a 61-27 split in favor of releasing the returns.
And here you thought this was just part of a "media distraction."

http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/...ns-129180.html

I haven't read this entire thread but only your original post here. Apparently even Mitts constituents are telling him to release his tax returns and get this out of the way. One of Mitt's aids said he did this thing a long time ago I guess when he became Governor and told folks he felt Tax Returns were very personal and shouldn't be something he has to provide to the public. Surely he must have known this was going to come up if he was running for President. I really do think he is hiding something. Something significant if he is digging his heels in about releasing them.

What do you think he's hiding, Sensia (and I agree he should release them, but I'm not going to get upset about it.) I think it is mainly a fishing expedition for the Dems. If there were crimes committed, the IRS would be there. That tells me more that the Dems want to find things to demagogue about. But I think he should release them anyway, but I'm not going to care if he doesn't.

StupidOldFart, are you really that stupid? Perhaps you are!

There does not have to be "crimes committed' for an issue to be damaging to a Presidential campaign. You need look no further than the Swift Boat ads against John Kerry in 2004. What crimes were committed by John Kerry? There were none! But the ads were devastating to Kerry's Presidential campaign against what was a very vulnerable sitting President. Does any of this sound familiar?

Whether Mitt has committed a crime is not the question that is on most voters minds. Sure, there is the possibility that Romney has committed crimes. Probably an extremely remote possibility but a possibility nonetheless. The more meaningful questions are: Is Romney trying to hide something? If not, why won't he release his tax reports? His Dad released his tax reports when he ran for President! Why won't Mitt? DUH! In the minds of the voter it doesn't necessarily have to be criminal. Perhaps something as simple as is a multi-millionaire using lucrative tax shelters to avoid paying taxes might be just enough to sway an independent minded voter.

SOF, you might want to try connecting the dots prior to posting! If you're a friggin' lawyer you must have skipped the Common Sense 101 class prior to entering law school!

This is what I am thinking, but who knows maybe there is something Mitt is worried about being seen as illegal and maybe he doesn't want any type of investigation done by the good ole IRS through an audit. I don't know but this makes no sense that he is not just releasing the tax returns. It just makes him look worse in the eyes of the independent voters.

I believe what is going on right now will splinter the Republican party for the next 20 years and, with any luck, create a strong third alternative for either moderates or the ultra conservatives to support. Right now, the Rs are more fucked up than the Ds ever have been ... and the Ds are, by nature, a fucked up group conglomeration of ideas.

The only thing the Rs have had going for them in the past few decades was unity and resolve. They don't have that anymore.

They will fall into the sea, tripping over their own dogma. (Or stepping in it!)

Meanwhile, I believe the partisan bullshit has pretty much pushed the US to the brink already.

Just sayin...

I must admit that I did not get this impression of you. I would not have said you were a far leftwing freakshow, but I did get the impression that you were an Obama supporter. For that mistake I must apologize. (Perhaps then a post I just made in another thread was more mistaken than I thought it might be.)

Perhaps you just hate the Republicans more than the Democrats, whereas I hate the Democrats more than the Republicans? Though I will not be voting for any of them in the general. Since I am in Texas I do vote in the Republican primaries since I figure I can at least try to get the least offensive one into the general since ultimately that is who will likely win my state.

honestly, I dont hate anyone from either party, or either party per se' .. I dont vote straight tickets, I vote for the individual. Anyone would be hardpressed to find a single post where I pat Obie on the back and say atta boy. I do however present a side of the debate (if you will) that the right leaning posters on the board tend to leave out, and more often than not I shine a bright light on partisan rhetoric. I do hate that because of the reason I previously stated. As for the sarcasim disclaimer, you had to be on the thread to understand the depth of the misunderstading of the title of the thread alone much less the back and forth exchanges .. as of today I do as I promised and add the disclaimer to eliminate confusion .
