The airlines were clearly put under by the government due to 9-11, ethanol plants getting money is something I do not support.

I think GM will go out of business for a basic simple reason:
They are not making cars people want to buy.
Also, Ethanol has been proven to be NOT environmentally friendly. Dems, Repubs, the Sierra Club, and the oil companies all agree......And we still cannot get rid of the program.....If we can't end something that we all agree on how the hell are we EVER going to cut government back to something we can afford? Its going to take a total collapse and a lot of suffering to ever end the waste and downright fraud.
And you can all save your time, don't care of Obama is to blame, don't care about Bush....the congress (which I think is the MOST corrupt group in government). occupy wall street, the tea party.......I don't really care who is to blame....We need to reshuffle the whole deck....Is there such a thing as the Anti Incumbent Party? If there in, vote them out.....

Airlines were receiving government subsidies from back in the '70's...

That's stupid. Here in Wichita, the city subsidizes airlines to get them to fly here, and keep their fares low. Who does that help? Why should I help pay for someone else's plane ticket?

at first glance, airlines buy fuel at the airport and pay tax on the fuel, you know where the tax $ goes dont you? I dont know the numbers but there is an offset of some sorts ... could be a complete wash, or a profitable investment ... or neither.

Several airlines also went bankrupt and disappeared during that time frame as well. Wichita is paying for that airline to be there not with federal tax but portions of its sales tax. Part of the reason i try not to shop in Wichita.

a 737 (small short to medium range jet, and the industry standard for years) holds aboout 7000 gallons of fuel .. x $500 a gallon thats $35K for 1 plane ... the industry goes through $3 billion dollars worth of fuel a year .. tax 3 billion$ and get back to me

I was referring to your brilliant comment that it was either good, bad, or a wash. I mean, such intelligent insight on this board like that is rare.
