NYC, the only place that no matter where I lived has always felt like home.

Give me a popsicle cart and a one-way ticket to the Caribbean and I'll be a happy camper. Can I take my folks, they truly are one of a kind amazing people!!!

Or maybe, Arkansas. Love that place and theres a special gal there I know....

Nah, you'd also be walking up and down lots of hills.

I concur completely and, lucky me, arrive Oahu in just 13 days, for at least 3 weeks. I actaully bought a one way ticket so I can stay as long as it's working for me! I keep looking at pictures on line and imagining the floral scent of the air. The second I get off the plane the lanquid, moist ambiance embraces me. I slooow down, rent a convertible, buy a lei and spend my days writing in the mornings and beach hopping in the afternoon. This time of year there are surf contests on the Pipeline, which is where I will be staying. Plenty of entertainment.

The North Shore, where my best friend of twenty years lives very simply, is Country. She lives in an Ohana complex, a group of six bungalows which share a common outdoor space. They have a pet pig, no joke, who wanders from home to home begging for scraps. Her name is Priscilla and she wears a pink bandana. We will bar-b-que (not Priscilla!), drink mango margaritas while lounging in hammocks, and listen to whomever wants to stop by and play guitar.

I have done Hawaii in many fashions and just don't see the need to stay in a fancy resort when in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. The Turtle Bay Resort is down the street should I desire a bit more sophistication. I'll wander into the casual restaurant/lounge on the Turtle Bay golf course; I think it's called Lei-Leis. There is a very private beach on the resort where I like to swim topless, and they offer horseback riding in the mornings.

My local friends are extreme sports professionals, sky divers, surfers and kite surfers. We build bonfires and share myths and knowledge about the stars, which hang low and unobstructed in that part of the world. We sleep in tents and around 8am, when the sun heats up the interior, jump into the water and then have an iced coffee from the cooler.

With any luck I'll get to visit another island or two, hopefully Maui. But it doesn't matter; in Hawaii , time stands still and just being in your skin is enough.

I am attracted to places because they are beautiful. I am attracted to people because they are warm, friendly compassionate, open, and really care for others.

I haven't been to all the ends of the earth, but I have been to a few of them. Some of the most beautiful places I have been are Hong Kong, Innsbruck, and Salzburg. I also love history and art. For this reason I like Paris, Rome, Florence and England. I could easily live in any of these places.

But people are a different story. I have rarely found better people than exist in the Midwest of the United States. Not in big cities, but mostly in the rural areas. Kansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Missouri, and the other states.

So, ideally, it would be a beautiful place like those listed above, with the people I find so nice.

[Admittedly, the people I like can be kind of narrow minded when it comes to the hobby, but they are still the nicest.]
Okay, I will obey the Clair and just pick one:Perth. It addresses all of the concerns and wants in Charles' post, as well as many others in the thread (including my own). Absolutely beautiful, with the Swan River and the Indian Ocean. Amazing climate - even better than San Diego. And finally, the nicest people I've ever known, with absolutely no hangups about sex or public nudity. Just don't eat the Veg-O-Mite! Guess after reading everyone's comments, I realized that was the right answer all along. But I so love to break rulz!

Live anywhere? Oh geez. I might live everywhere! Right now, from what I've actually seen with my own eyes, I would spend most of my time on the tiny islands off the coast of Crete. The Greek Islands have always been an area of the world that both fascinates me and calms me all at the same time. The climate in Summer and Spring is lovely. The water is so sparkly silver that its impossible not to lose your clothes and dive right in. I've left the deck of a boat many times without notice because the glittering water was just so quietly whispering my name.

I've also enjoyed Phuket, Thailand year round. There's a different feeling than the one Crete gives me in Thailand. It's spicier. It's more of a restlessness, but I like it. From the moment I step off the plane there, I feel like a drunk fruit fly, all heavy with the heat of the sun and the sweetness of the air. Delicious. No need for a shirt, shoes, pants or anything but sunglasses. Who wants to come along?

Ok, I read through the whole post and it looks like everyone picked somewhere based on scenery. I still can't change my pick because the scenery is close enough to my choice that it is still my choice and I am surprised no one else has listed it. If you don't know about it or never been, please do some research and please go if you ever get the chance, its heaven on earth....

Pattaya, Thailand....

Default There's no place like home ;)

Every morning as I am driving Edward out to the beach I hit a certain point on Highway 1 that just takes my breath away. Sometimes I can see Grey,Humpback, and even Blue Whales , and Porpoises as I walk Ed on the beach most afternoons the sunset is amazing. We can spend hours wandering around SF always amazed by how gorgeous it is. I do not think a day goes by where I do not feel lucky to live where I do.

Probably somewhere in the Rockies. But Rudy makes a good case for nomadic life.

I always thought you two would make a cute couple

I haven't traveled enough to know where I would want to live for the rest of my life. I do know that, I don't want to be wrapped up in an electric blanket for too many more winters. brrrrr

Ansley, in that case I would take Chicago off your list of places to live.
