This is tired argument. You're attempting to discredit the quote, not on its merit, but rather on an trait of its author that is insignificant. When called on it, you pull out an extreme analogy to make the point. The analogy used is not a fair comparison, hence my humor in response.

If it came out that Stephen King were a drug addict, would that make his novels any less compelling to his fans? The author made an observation on human behavior, the validity of which can be debated without the distraction of what his vice may or may not have been.
