My advice: Only tell the story if you are asked.
Always think…. What if the person wants to know MORE? Can you tell them more than you already have?
Know a story, but use it to your advantage.

Gotyour 6 is right on, apply the KISS principle. Danny this is Jennifer, Jennifer this is Danny.
That's it!
Don't say anything else.
Have a story in your back pocket, but only tell the story if you are asked. By telling more than the person needs or wants to know, it makes it look like you're trying to cover something up.
Besides, it is not necessary to tell all of the story right off the bat. Why? Because by telling the entire made up story, if they want to know more, you're back to square one: fishing for bullshit filler.

No problem
I may have posted this before I have an answer ready that covers most occasions. I generally know the ladies name or have one available. She is my Physical Therapist and she has lowered my blood pressure so I am paying off on a bet with her. In most cases I don't give a damn. I have introduced ladies to the mayor of my city and to friends that have known me for years. My kids know I date and if some one says they saw me with a young red head they will just smile.
I am single and old enough to have served KP at the last supper so I could not care less.
For those that are hiding from your SO you have a problem....

In a obviously joking manner, and hopefully she's quick enough to catch on and play along.
I might also just introduce her as a friend. Emphasizing the friend part a bit but also leaving it a bit ambiguous, so the other person wonders if she is just a friend or maybe just a regular date or something along those line.

being a young single guy, no one would care, you're supposed to be out with pretty, sexy women. why the heck do you got to make shit up, just call her a friend and that's it. you don't have to make excuses, get it.

Introductions
In May a lady and I spent several days in Bossier City. On the way from Dallas we stopped and had lunch with a friend. Her eyes bugged out when he drove up in a police car. My friend has an idea of what was going on and has nothing but good things to say about my love of pretty women. Once I made a date from a squad car for later that evening. The cop I was riding with was laughing his ass off. I have several times asked ladies to accompany me to political doings. A beautiful woman on your arm is not some thing to be ashamed of. I am widowed and my children know of some of the ladies I spend time with.
I know some out there are doing this on the QT but for me it has been therapy.

I have found that if it matters to my clients they will set up the story in advance. I used to have an attorney client that I visited with in the city he lived and worked in. He was fairly high profile so the story was I was an out of town real estate investor he was helping. Fortunately I have a real world career I can use as an excuse to be out and about with my clients.
Where the backstory isn't covered before hand, and this has happened on more than one occasion, I just stick my hand out and introduce myself. I don't even wait to see if he's going to hesitate, because the hesitation is the tell.

I just blow it off, as this is my friend (insert name here) and roll on. One good thing about being single and decent looking people see me with different women fairly often so it is not out of the ordinary for me.

This topic happens to me a lot. I have a side gig doing odd job for providers. Grocery and outfit shopping with/for a few providers is part of it. A gal with a guy attracts less unwanted attention for the gal. I found this thread as nothing new to me. But so far all posts are good.
I guy I know at work has seen me with 4 different providers grocery shopping.
"hay dude I'm single, what of it' is all I say.

The only concern I have is IF we are stopped by the cops when we are driving some where. Some of my ladies have trusted me with their real names and I would just give it to the cops. A friend would not be a problem as most of my friends know I date. The police on the other hand will separate us and ask for names. Perhaps I am getting off subject but I wonder.

No one has mentioned the obvious ... sweating profusely, stammering, and running away like the pubes were on fire.

yes if in a car together, each should know each others real name.
As I have have been stopped. So far for me, they give up if both know each others real name.
As a driver for a few. I find stay away from sleepy towns and village's late. Busy towns, city's along with in the sticks are ok. But if in a place where nothing for the most part happens. They are looking for something ta do. So if your the only thing moving, they are watching.

I wonder if any one else has worried about that. I guess if I see a red light in the mirror I will ask for her real name and give her mine. Any one else have suggestions about this.
Time for a new thread....
