I can see where it's OK for ladies to use the word among themselves but it seems a bit crude for me as a client to use it (so I don't) even though it is correct according to the definition.
You're right Spanky, I just don't like the word. It's too limiting and it has negative connotations. When I think, "whore," I think of someone who merely supplies an orifice for a financial return, and nothing else.
Even though part of what I do fits the definition, I believe that there is much broader scope that defines me. Confidant, muse, therapist, friend, companion, advisor... I believe courtesan is much more fitting.

I suppose it all depends on how the lady looks at herself at the end of the day. I don't consider myself a "whore" just because of what I do for a living, although society would certainly label me as one. Every provider here is so much more than her job description.
