The problem is, the explanation given that "everybody does it" (lie about their age) ignores the fact that for many men it really does matter, and there is no reason why they shouldn't expect a woman who claims to be 29 to look like she is 29.

Some women can apply a fudge factor and get away with it. But if you do that and also fudge on your weight, then have an event (illness, accident, or just a "bad hair day"), the accumulation of all that can create a situation where you really do appear much older than your stated age...maybe even older than your true age.

Again, I don't believe I have ever met the lady in question, but I know the reviewer to historically be an accurate chronicler of his observations and not prone to exaggeration. Maybe he is dead wrong in this case, but I can see from the OP's response how the situation may have been set up for him to come to the conclusions he reached.
