Interesting thread, because it makes me think that a true gift is a surprise, from the heart and not expected or required. Sometimes a good ear is the best gift, or support and encouragement. Someone taking the time to really see who you are, and help you sift and sort your thoughts can be more valuable than any material thing could be.

What I want in the way of a gift from my SO, or anyone else for that matter is, is something they want me to have. If someone knows me – or in the demimonde, takes the time to read my site and a few emails back and forth – they will know exactly what to get for me. I’ve never taken a gift back, unless it didn’t fit, or worse re-gifted a gift in my life. It’s just plain rude to me.

Amen!
I agree. I LOVE a gift that is given with LOVE. Yes, I said it, the evil "L" word not allowed in the Hobby...I say BS!
MY friends love to give me gifts they KNOW I LOVE and WANT and WILL USE! Why? Because they care enough to really get to know me, on a level most people are not open to, esp. in the Hobby.
I am SO blessed to know so many truly wonderful people who are happy to go out of their way for me, if needed, as I am for them! This, of course, means they read my profile, reviews, etc., long before they ever contacted me. By the time we finally met in person, we were already friends.
I say, if you're here, I hope you're loving it! If not, why keep doing the same thing without different results?
If more people in the world were open to others, this would not even be a matter of discussion. "Gifts", whether tangible, or not, would be a "given", on both parties. I give ME, every time. I LOVE my life, so there is much to give!

I prefer to get gifts over money. If it's from a patron, then he's already investing enough money for our time together, so I'd be happy with small yet thoughful gifts. Books and chocolates are always good. Same goes for real life friends.
I always love getting gifts that I would never ever buy for myself, like a waffle iron or one of those shake weight thingy. And, I hate shopping for myself (gasp), so clothes and shoes are always welcomed.

I'm sorry. I thought it was appropriate. Besides, I put $10K inside. Did you not open it?

I am truly thrilled with any type of gift or tip a client is generous to bestow upon me. I have an extensive list on my website with gifts in every price range, and some of the most cherished 'gifts' I have received, were the thoughtful cards that my donation was placed in.
Gentlemen, do keep in mind, that many providers have SOs, so flowers, lingerie, even jewelry, may not be appropriate. When I had a a bf last fall, I had to throw away several beautiful boquets and return several things to Victoria Secret to avoid suspicion.
If you do want to get her something personal, such as lingerie, or jewelry, there is always the option of taking her shopping to pick out something for herself. I have a client that does this, rather to pick out some Godiva chocolates, lingerie or adult toys, or, for my bday, a set of beautiful pearl earrings. We enjoy getting to spend the extra time w one another, and I get to pick out exactly what I want!!!
