I would rather count it in front of me. Then we both know what it is.

I've always kind of thought of "the envelope" as a euphemism for "donation." In practice I place the amount, w/o envelope, (usually in hundreds so as not to be bulky for her to carry) on a table in plain sight or hand it to her directly if she asks for it. I've never had any complaints that it was not in an actual envelope.* Consider this my contribution to the environment and not wasting and envelope If I meet her out in public (e.g. dinner/drinks), I've never had anyone insist on taking care of business prior to moving to a private place.
*of course it is precounted so I'm not fumbling around in front of her counting it out, "1, 2, 3, 4,......"

That's why I don't use envelopes. I have the donation separated out, usually with a paper clip in my pocket. I lay it out or hand it over. And I prefer that it be counted by the provider in my presence. No misunderstandings that way, she should feel comfortable that she's not being shorted, and much harder for anyone to make a false allegations.

LOL @ Rachel!
Just as Rachel and EW mentioned, enclosing it in a card has worked for me. Even when meeting in a public place, I've had gents place it inside a b-day or other occasional card and hand it to me upon being seated. I respond by thanking them (as appropriately as possible for a public place -- a little kiss, hug etc). I don't really care about having the envelope or not...its just easier for the client to know he's placing what he meant to on the table. I've even had one place it in the top of my corset and sit down on the bed as if to say..."let the games begin". It was hot.
Oh, and another good way to avoid the hassle of picking up a card would be to pick up a few of them and just leave the extra blank ones in the glove box, etc. It really is a nice feeling to get one...very thoughtful. I recently received a few congratulatory gifts after graduation last month, and one came with a really sweet card from a local gent I'd seen. It was a nice touch.

I usually reuse the envelopes, just because I don't like to throw things away. Yeah... I'm a loser like that.
My personal favorite is reusing the envelope for my rent each month. I always hand it over to my landlord on the 1st, and he always wonders why I giggle during the exchange. If he only knew...

I do the same! I get to the checkout at Wal-Mart, and pull out my white envelope...I love it! It's such of a naughty feeling...you are flaunting it, but yet it's not obvious!

Most instructions I read from the ladies indicates to put the envelope some place obvious, but never mention it. Others here have mentioned that they like the lady to count it up front, while some ladies have said they count it before play begins. Now, what would the ladies do if I handed you the cash w/o an envelope and said something like, "Here's the required fee, let's fuck."

Speaking only for myself, that would be HOT!
Can you throw it at me while you say that? Then just grab me by the ankles and pull me down towards you...climbing on top of me landing a nice DFK on my mouth...slightly pulling the hair at the nape of the neck and nibbling on my lower lip?

What's the issue here?
Over many, many envelopes in many, many sessions, I've never had an issue. Nor do I recall this being a problem raised with any frequency. It's discrete and convenient--i.e. as a system it ain't broke.

The original question is why did the convention develop? I agree that it generally works but it does seem that many don't follow it.
Do you know how the tradition developed?
