I know quite a few and they are quite educated and certainly not racists. Some voted for Trump because they would never see Hilary in office. Others voted because they are Republicans and a Republican president, even Donald Trump, would help achieve their policy goals.

I dislike Trump, but most of the people I hang around adore him. You substitute "Hillary Clinton" for "Donald Trump", "socialist" for "racist," etc. and they say much the same thing as you. The Democrats believe Donald Trump is a criminal and want to lock him up. The Republicans believe Hillary Clinton is a criminal and want to lock her up. This is not healthy for democracy.

That said, to Hillary's credit, she's never to my knowledge said anything about putting Donald behind bars. On the other hand Trump's attitude towards Hillary is like a populist leader of a banana republic -- throw your political opponent in jail. Fortunately the Justice Department, Congress and the judicial branch will keep him corralled.

Trumps base if anything is expanding. People who thought he would do irreparable harm now think the harm has been done so they lose nothing by supporting him.

As I said before, if Hilary is given the democratic nod in 2020, even though if Trump were on fire, I wouldn't piss on him to help put the fire out, Ill vote for him this time.

I guess it depends on how you define Trump's "base". Anyone who voted for him in 2016 or the subset that will support him through thick and thin no matter what.

If it's the latter, then no, Trump has lost none of his base. His mainline supporters are as devoted as ever. However, regarding the former, I think that either many people who voted for Trump in 2016 abandoned him, or many who did not vote in 2016 for whatever reason came out in 2018. More likely the former.

From what I have read, the biggest losses by Republicans were in the suburbs and among women voters, primarily college educated women. The only demographics that totally support Trump seem to be old white men without a college degree and evangelicals. There are other demographics where Trump is about 50-50 but not many. It will be a very interesting next 2 years.

Second, Democrats did significantly better with college-educated whites than non-college-educated whites. Third, the South is different: Republicans did far better with whites of all different sorts of backgrounds there than they did anywhere else in the country.

It's her extreme partisanship combined with her demeanor. She lies through her teeth all the while with a huge smile on her face. Harry Reid and George Mitchell are other Democratic leaders who fit this mold. This combination isn't as common among Republicans, but Tom DeLay and perhaps Donald Trump are examples on the other side. Trump isn't as sanctimonious as the rest but he lies more.
