Before European colonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa, the native people lived a primitive tribal life style with stone age level technology and no complex architecture.
Native Sub-Saharan Africans were exploited and their resources were stolen by the Europeans. However, the native people of Sub-Saharan African also benefitted from their interaction with a more advanced civilization.
The ancient Romans and Greeks invaded and conquered most of the known world and slaughtered and brutalized the inhabitants of the countries they invaded. Ironically in the process of being forced to conform to a more successful culture the invaded country actually benefitted in the long run because they were able incorporate elements of the more advanced culture into their own.
Much of modern day British civilization is rooted in Roman culture because they were conquered by the Romans circa 43 AD. A large part of the country that is now known as Germany was invaded and conquered by the Romans circa 12 BC. This invasion was illustrated in the movie Gladiator. The invaded country absorbed Roman culture and in the long run their civilization progressed more rapidly.
The history of human civilization is really an endless series of countries being invaded and conquered. The fact that Sub-Saharan Africa was colonized by a more advanced civilization is not unique, it is the norm. Sub-Saharan Africa certainly lags behind most of the world in standard of living today, but this is not due to their being victimized by the Europeans. The standard of living in Sub-Saharan Africa was very low by world standards before they were colonized and it remains that way.
African countries such as Zimbabwe (formerly Northern Rhodesia) were dramatically better off under British colonial rule than under self government today. Under colonial rule Northern Rhodesia was known as the bread basket of Africa. Today, under self government, starvation is widespread.
