Well, although that is true sometimes, I have always gotten better rates at money exchange places that would usually be at travel agencies in country than at banks. But, I would always have someone in country that knew what was going on and where to get a get better rates than at a bank. But, like everything YMMV. This was in South Africa, Brazil and in Veneuzla

Maybe I was poor in choice of words...whether it is banks, travel agencies, or simple fx shops, the point is do it in country. Find the place where there are literally 8-10 places doing fx all on the same block and make your best deal
