With respect to "what to tell" the wife, I think you performed exceptionally well. Don't know your situation; but, for the benefit of others I might suggest deleting all calls from an obvious hobby phone or perhaps advice to ourselves would be to clear the hobby phone after final contact. Don't know but perhaps the police would consider withholding a hobby phone. I understand the perceived need for them to provide your phone number if asked for it; that would seem normal under most circumstances.
