I like your analysis Magic. I too am watching Marty's (Harrelson) behaviors like the 2 detectives interviewing him.
But I don't want to figure the mystery out. I want to be punched in the gut with it.

This series is darker than dark. It's almost painful to watch, but it's like that train wreck you can't help but witness. The grittiness and in your face display of interpersonal conflicts remind me of one of my favorite cop dramas of all time; Southland.

I like the way u broke it down magic. The lawn mowing scene was awesome. Especially with the sexual innuendo referenced in 'mowing the lawn'

Your analysis of the switch type casting makes perfect sense. I have been thinking they are polar opposites while you make a good case for them being one in the same.

I can see Hart becoming Cohle if Hart ever endured the kind of losses Cohle has but I can't see Cohle ever becoming Hart. Maybe Cohle was like Hart at one time but life has made him sullen and tragically existential. Cohle's character is more evolved introspectively. He is honest about his perceptions with others and with himself. He is not a slave to his insecurities and fears like Hart is because Hart still has so much to lose.

I'm enjoying the journey as well. Its an exceptional story. The tidbits of pre-internet hobby culture is also very fascinating to me. Very!

I will actually be disappointed if Russ sleeps with Maggie. He's got principles and certain philosophies that he lives by and I just don't see him sleeping with a married man's wife. Especially the wife of a fellow police officer, not to mention his partner. Unless the storyline and context change a lot over the course of time.
She likes him, no doubt but if that happens, then I think it would just reduce the show to the same level as most of the rest of the fodder that's on TV.
I just don't see it going that way.

+1. Rust has ethics. He is fundamentally destroyed. His ethics are all he has. Very few people can relate to that concept. I agree with wanderer. It would demean his character considerably. That's why he didn't fcuk the lot lizard.

you're missing something here. Maggie wants him, mind body and soul. she needs to nurture him and f---- his brains out to help cure him from his fatalism. that's what a good woman does to a man. she cures him or ruins him for life.

Well, since we are seeing him about 17 years in the future, chain smoking cigarettes, cutting Lone Star tall-boys into human figurines with a pocket knife and spouting wisdom from the dark side, she must have not been able to cure him...or did she?

That is a good observation. Did you notice all the street noise the other night when Maggie called him? Sounded like his place was about 10 feet from a heavily traveled road.
Oh well, he doesn't sleep anyway.
