Cities cannot legalize substances against state and federal penal codes. Personally I favor legalization of weed, but until it's made legal Austin police should enforce the laws and not just look on at city events like Marleyfest where stoners and other brainless idiots get intoxicated in public. Public intoxication should always result in arrest.

LOL am I the only one on this board in contracting? I never wanna hear people talk about how hard illegals work. They only work because they have no choice, and never, and I mean never, do any job correctly. They are the least skilled of any group I've ever had to deal with, and you have to watch them every second. They are a nightmare. But the subs I have to use won't use anyone else because they keep the difference between what they certify that they pay in wages and what they really pay these morons. Every sub I know has become a millionaire by juicing up that spread, but the owners pay because later everything built falls apart because it was build by illiterate peasants.

duh, but that hasn't stopped entire states from legalizing it anyway, contrary to federal law...even select cities within states that prohibit its recreational use have done it. enforcement or lack thereof is another issue altogether, about which we likely agree.

That's cool, i don't disagree. But I'm talking about punctuality...sometimes they never even show up! But i actually found the answer to it: it's actually a cultural phenomenon. In Mexico, punctuality isn't valued...in fact it's common for folks to show up to parties and what not several hours late..."fashionably late" is apparently fashionable there.

I won't go to any of those touristy things unless I'm performing at one. Even then. It's kinda creepy.

But the good news is that no matter how fucked up I dress, I'll be more in vogue than any of the Portlandia refugees, and far, far cleaner.

whookers dig clean...

Austin is my favorite town but it has it's short comings too.

Let us not forget Austin's ludicrous claim as the Self proclaimed "Live Music Capital" when in reality it is a big fat zero in regard to the Music Industry. Nothing of importance happens here aside from a couple of annual over hyped/priced and highly commercialized festivals.
If you're a working musician you'll have to travel away from Austin just to earn enough to pay your most basic bills. That's been the reality at least since I arrived here in the 90's.

In fact within the pro musician's community Austin is known as the country's biggest collection of professional amateurs.

How abut the general quality of service and high level of incompetence in Austin compared to other urban areas?

The first thing I noticed upon arriving here other than the lack of income potential for musicians was every single fucking "Professional" service related company does a half assed job and doesn't care because they have no competition to keep them on their toes.
From insurance companies to medical facilities to mechanics to AC repairmen and plumbers. I have lived all over the country and have never witnessed this degree of incompetence anywhere else.

With that being said I still love the people and the vibe of Austin more than anywhere else. Hipsters or no there is still far less superficial prejudice here than most places.
Nobody here gives a shit about where you live, who you know, what you drive or where you went to school.

It is the best city ever in my book.

You're way off. There are both federal and state statutes against the possession and/or sale of controlled substances. What some states are doing is repealing their statutes, thereby allowing possession and distribution. So far federal authorities in those states are choosing not to enforce federal statutes because it would be wildly unpopular. A city cannot repeal a state statute. All a city can do is instruct it's city police department to not enforce it. But then the county in which that city resides has it's own Sheriff and he is not held to that. The Sheriff will continue to enforce the statutes.

Austin is the live music capital of Travis County, and nothing more.

The reason why services here are so bad is because no one here cares about work. They're all lazy slackers. Try eating at the old restaurants that have been here for decades like the Nighthawk or Dan's Hamburgers or El Rancho.....what aweful shit!!!!!!!! LOL. Try the shitty steaks at the Hoffbrau or the so-called German food at Schultz's Garden....total crap.

Yeah it's a tolerant city but that's because everyone here has something wrong with them they don't want pointed out LOL.

When I started doing construction work here the first thing I noticed was that the local contractors had the lowest standards and expectations of anywhere I'd ever been. They never even expected a slab foundation to be flat. They never expected a window or door to be straight or plumb. The buildings in this town are the worst anywhere, and I can't be the only person who's noticed that.

about what? i'm not talking about repealing or enforcement...

i'm talking about passing laws that contradict those of higher force; it's an ignoring of the Supremacy Clause: federal supercedes state...in the same way, state supercedes county, county supercedes city...

who cares what the county Sheriff does? Exhibit A: Portland, Maine...city passed law legalizing recreational marijuana, contradicting county/state/fed

A city cannot repeal a state law. A city cannot pass a law saying that any particular thing is "legal" to possess or sell. All any city or state or government can do is repeal a statute criminalizing something, or add an amendment to a state constitution declaring that such state, "shall pass no law....."

There are no cities which have "legalized" possession of substances illegal according to state statutes. The most they can do is instruct their police to have a policy and practice of overlooking the violations when they encounter them.

Why would you not care about where someone went to school or who they know or how they live?

What does that say about the "vibe" of Austin?

What I think you're saying is my point exactly in that it's all lazy ass slackers in Austin and nobody gives a shit about accomplishing anything. If it were not for the construction work here I'd been gone in a heartbeat. I'd go back to places where people care if someone is a dumbass or not, and dumbasses are to be avoided. I'd even go back home to Houston!
