Doomed shelter dogs.

I found a injured dog and took it to SPCA. I told them if they were going to put it down to call me and I would pick her up and take her home. They called me and I was at work. I work 24 hr shift and told them I would pick her up in the morning. I came to pick her up and they had put her down the day before. The SPCA is a death camp and will not support them or take another animal there. The animal cops show is just that, for show. I have since taken in two stray dogs and a kitten that her mother was killed from the station. They are good pets, and street animals have the best genes. The only ones that survive are the ones that are smart enough to find food and avoid getting run over. On ne side of town there are dead dogs on every corner. People don't even slow down, they just run them over. I will never buy a pure breed animal again when so many are killed that need good homes. If you are not ready for a long commitment, do not get a pet. You are only contributing to the problem. Also lots of no kill shelters that need volunteers, cleaning cages, walking, feeding etc.

I truly commend you for this! I'm shocked that they put that dog down after you said you'd be there in the morning. WTF! I saved my dog when he was only 7 weeks old from a puppy mill farm or whatever you call it. They breed dogs and if they don't sell them then they burn them in a fire. It's really fucked up and I am glad I got him. People just don't have hearts anymore! It saddens me to even see dead animals on the side of the road. People just don't care about anything but themselves and I wish more people took the time to be caring of the things around them but I guess that's life.

The corridor of cruelty is on the ne side near 59 and Tidwell area. Neither the city or county claims the territory so no one picks the animals up. This is where corridor rescue comes in. They have set up feeding stations, have monthly food giveaways and have rescued hundreds of animals and place them with good homes. I have personally witnessed some of the badly abused animals that they have nursed back to health. I have one myself. If you want to really make a difference in Houston's animal problem spend your time or money with them. I'm done pimping them now.

My "Heinz 57" dog came from the pound (he was gonna be euthanized the next day) and so will my next whenever the day comes that I need a new companion. Currently, my best pal is about 14 years of age and far healthier than I am. He won't be winning any trophies for conformation but a mutt like him is the best dog I could ever ask for. Breaks my heart to think of the day he will be gone but at the moment it doesn't seem like it will be anytime soon. I'm thankful for that.

The various shelters in this area have suffered from two situations .... one is avoidable, the other not.

Beginning with the hurricanes in the Louisiana/Mississippi area animals from that area and the Beaumont area were brought to the Harris County area for "housing," which jammed the facilities with "out of town" pets and overwhelmed the facilities. As a consequence they were unable to adopt out all of the animals and had to increase destroying them when they arrived. That situation is avoidable.

The second situation is the economy, SPCA and Harris County experience pet owners coming to the shelters to drop off their animals because they cannot take care of them any longer due to the loss of jobs, etc. I have been at both places when they have turned the owners down. In addition people are moving from their homes when foreclosed upon or moving from the area for a job and leaving their pets behind. Animal control is overwhelmed and cannot respond to calls to pick them up .. plus they lack "room at the inn" .... so the neighborhood becomes the "rescue squad." As an added negative, the economic downturn, receission, depression, or whatever one wants to call it, results in lower and fewer contributions. (A new "marketing" and "advertising" strategy might be more productive also). Not avoidable (except for the disgusting "advertising").

If people would take care of their own pets ... and at a minimum have them fixed to stop the increases if they have to leave them behind.

The root cause is people. People do not take care of their pets, much like their children. They want animal shelters to take care of their pet or take on another litter of cats/dogs rather than getting their pet fixed. These same people get up in arms because schools try to discipline their heathen offspring because the parents are too busy to raise their brats.

Several shelters in N TX are doing cheap adoptions to clear out the shelters, or create room. I have seen ads for adoptions like one dollar per pound of pet. They have adopted out hundreds of pets this way.

The "shelters" down here adopt and have advertised.

They take in more than they can find homes. SPCA "intake" door parking area is busy and appointments for intake are days away, if not weeks.

If anyone decides on getting a pet please do it from the shelter because you never know which poor animal will be put down the next day

It's all just so sad. I love my dog too damn much to ever take him there or anywhere and leave him.

If you read or looked at the pictures of the dogs they put down then you would have seen a couple of pics of poor chihuahuas. Yes, it's all dogs. They don't care what breed. What kind of question is that or are you trying to make a mean joke because I have one...whatever you are trying to say...please stop because this thread isn't the place for negativity towards me.
