Actually, democracy is why we are in this mess. When the 17th Amendment was adopted, allowing the popular election of Senators, the politics of manipulation took a firm hold. At the same time, the income tax was enacted, giving the manipulators ample money with which to buy votes. And, at the same time, we established a central bank, opening the door to monetary manipulation, virtually independent of the people and run by banks. This is the perfect environment for crony capitalism to grow and thrive. We need to repeal 1913.
