Also his base, while largely supportive, has also been made vulnerable by his own actions. A number in the agricultural industry who have been affected by Trump's trade stance. Also the 2A community is pissed at him and lost trust. Some have gone so far to say they will vote for a Democrat instead.
That's not his entire base but it's a good chunk.

If the Dems had a solid basis for impeachment they would do so.
They don't so, the are relying on mud slinging.

In some ways it's like the birthers.
If there were anything to Obamas illegitimate birth certificate, the Clintons would have used it early in the campaign.

Two hildebeest supporters in ’08 reportedly shared Odumbo ‘birther’ story
[F]ormer McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief James Asher tweeted Friday that Blumenthal had “told me in person” that Odumbo was born in Kenya.
“During the 2008 Democratic primary, [hildebeest associate] Sid Blumenthal visited the Washington Bureau of McClatchy Co.,” Asher said in an email Friday to McClatchy, noting that he was at the time the investigative editor and in charge of Africa coverage.
“During that meeting, Mr. Blumenthal and I met together in my office and he strongly urged me to investigate the exact place of President Odumbo’s birth, which he suggested was in Kenya. We assigned a reporter to go to Kenya ...

The Dems have no real foundation for impeachment but, they keep throwing it out there anyway. They don't want to bring it to the floor because they would have to prove their accusations in a well televised forum.

Sidney Blumenthal is a close hildebeest associate. Odumbo wouldn't let hildebeest put Blumenthal on the State Department payroll because, in part, Blumenthal did advocate the 'Birther' story.
FWIW, Blumenthal was hildebeest's principle adviser in Libya to take out Gaddafi.
Blumenthal, hildebeest and the hildebeest Foundation are currently being investigated by the IRS for violations of FARA: the crime Mueller persecuted Flynn and Manafort for.
My take on it is that Blumenthal, and another hildebeest volunteer, did indeed originate and promote the 'Birther' story long before Trump ever thought to repeat it, and so-called Factcheckers have bent over backwards to put distance between hildebeest and this story. Trouble is, Blumenthal has his nose so far up hildebeest's ass that there never was any distance between them ... as the FBI memo below details:

Thanks for connecting the dots.
Trump has this habit of just throwing shit out to see what sticks. He seems to play stuff by ear rather then having specific details worked out.
He is also a master at playing the left-biased media and the progressives like a cheap violin.
If the economy holds up and no major international crises , such as the Iran hostage bit that got Carter, he gets another four.
From a hobbyist perspective though, his closeness with the moral religious right is problematic although, I doubt that he personally has any objection to nookie rental. after all, he does own several hotels.
