Do the Scientologist still use that "E-Meter", a contraption that was suppose to tell something about your spiritual essence. Most electronics engineers say it is nothing more than a fancy Ohm Meter.

I can remember years ago, there was an article in a major publication where they found you could get the same readings by plugging the thing into a tomato.

It's not more STUPID or WEIRD than any other religion or one that fancies itself a religion *shrugs* .... alien god or big man sitting on a throne in the sky or warrior god(ess) with a bunch of arms ..... meh.

You would be surprised how misinformed most people are on the Waco (Branch Dividians) incident. If he really was breaking any law they would have had him up to 1 week prior to the incident, without a gun fight. The guy was always jogging around his property and would even make trips into town. ATF really screwed the pooch so they covered up the story with false accusations about them.

Also, the government doesn't like it when you avoid taxes through religion and buy lots of guns/ammo.

Also, look up a movie called The Man Who Would Be King. There are people all over the place just looking for a leader.

There are difference with Religions and Cults......THAT is my point.

The man in the sky has history on his side....

Warrioror Goddesses- I think you refer to the Celtic myths and legend. They were a tribe I think....

Religions don't have a set price for their levels.......This does not address Scientology and that it is a scam. I would like to debate whith someone who can take me on at my level, with facts...


Houstontexgent- I know I saw thet recently.....I think I can totally do that....I need to get myself a religion going.....It's an all $$$$$ enterprise...

I think the differences are a matter of degree.

Religions usually claim legitimacy due to longevity - they've been convincing folks to accept their mythology for centuries. That makes the teachings no more valid - whenever "faith" is a central tenet of a religion, that's code for "we're manipulating you with stuff that isn't real."

Religions are also usually less direct in their extraction of money from the faithful. You may be allowed to stick around even if you don't pony up.

To me, telltale signs of a cult are the desire to remove a believer from his environment, to take a significant portion of his income, and the fact that the leader(s) of the organization have become wealthy. Also, the leader is typically revered with almost godlike qualities.

Not all cults exhibit all these characteristics. But if you see any of them in your "religion", you should probably realize that the purpose of the group is not to help with your spiritual enlightenment, but rather to use you for their benefit.
