James Goodale, the lawyer for The New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case against the Nixon administration, declared in the Times on Tuesday that Obama is going to be worse than Nixon.
“It is a further example of how President Obama will surely pass President Richard Nixon as the worst president ever on issues of national security and press freedom,” he wrote.
Until President Obama came into office, no one thought talking or emailing was not protected by the First Amendment. President Obama wants to criminalize the reporting of national security information. This will stop reporters from asking for information that might be classified. Leaks will stop and so will the free flow of information to the public.
I've written that the administration action against Julian Assange in the Wikileaks case was a clarion call to journalists. Now, the Rosen case shows, it may be too late.
The A.P. case is more evidence of President Obama's dismissal of the First Amendment in national security cases. There was no need to subpoena The A.P. without telling The A.P. And there was no need to subpoena scores of telephone records of A.P. reporters. The subpoena was over-broad.
The First Amendment protects The A.P.’s right to gather news, as it protects Rosen’s too. Obama’s view is that national security interests nearly always trump the First Amendment. No president has had this view before, except Richard Nixon.
Goodale also talked to New York magazine:
Q. With the AP and Fox News stories, it seems like Obama's record on leakers is finally becoming a mainstream issue. Why did it take until now?
GOODALE: The press has been very forgiving to Obama with respect to the press issue. Why? I think the press generally likes Obama, as I do, and doesn't want to believe what is right in front of them. They prefer to ignore it. Since the events that I describe in my book that are very unfavorable, they have not attracted huge publicity.
The AP subpoena changed that. Unfortunately, it was combined with the IRS and Benghazi stories, so the spotlight was there. The AP story had a lot of confluence of factors that you probably won't see again — too many things went wrong at the same the time. But now the issue is in play. And when you start looking back at it, it doesn't look really good.

I'd really like a link to that, BL, because if they did, they should be run out of office themselves.
Nevertheless, we can't let the argument that "since Bush did it, we have to let Obama do it, too" carry the day. If we do, we will never get the better government that Obama promised in his first campaign, and in his first few months in office.
The corruption has to end. It has to end now. We have to let the politicians know that we will not stand for this any longer, regardless of party or other affiliation.
If we find a corrupt Democrat, we need to throw him out of office, regardless of what his predecessor did. If we find a corrupt Republican, we need to throw him out of office, regardless of what his predecessor did. If we find a corrupt Libertarian, we need to throw him out of office, regardless of what his predecessor did. If we find a corrupt Tea Partier, we need to throw him out of office, regardless of what his predecessor did. If we find a corrupt Socialist, we need to throw him out of office, regardless of what his predecessor did. And so on, and so on.
We have to take a stand for what is right. We have to stop accepting corruption and mediocrity, simply because it is our guy in power, and the other guys got away with it when they were in power.
But I'd still really like to see a link to something that details your statement. I would like to know their names.

Let's just start with what reporters you think were candidates for treason charges...

James Goodale does seem to be apolitical. There is nothing out there on his views. Good! thats the journalists should be.

James Goodale: Journalists should wake to Obama’s free speech record

James Goodale, the chief counsel to The New York Times when the paper published the Pentagon Papers, says that the Obama administration has been more restrictive of the First Amendment than any other president in history, even Richard Nixon. In his new book, Fighting for the Press, Goodale implores journalists to put pressure on Obama, who he believes gets a free pass a Republican president wouldn’t get from the press.
In a conversation with the Columbia Journalism Review, Goodale points to the administration’s use of the 1917 Espionage Act to sedate American journalism. “The biggest challenge to the press today is the threatened prosecution of WikiLeaks, and it’s absolutely frightening,” he said. During Obama’s two terms, the Espionage Act has been used to prosecute more alleged leakers than all former presidential offices combined.
Goodale said journalists don’t seem to consider this much of a problem. “They don’t believe it,” he told CJR. “I actually have talked to two investigative reporters who are household names, and I said, ‘Do you realize what’s happening to you if this goes forward?’ And I talk, I get no response, and the subject shifts to other parts of the book. No one seems to care.”
