In 1995 the Oscar for "Best Supporting Actor" went to Martin Landau for "Ed Wood". Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Never heard of this movie. Of the five nominees in this category I only saw two of the movies.

I would have voted for Sam. He was AWESOME in this movie. Gary was not even in the same ball park with Sam's performance.

I think Sam didn't win it because he was just being Sam. Not a lot of acting skill involved.
Don't get me wrong. I thought the movie was great and loved those characters and I'll watch anything Sam is in but if Sam deserved an Oscar for memorizing some great lines and delivering them in his his stereotypical bad ass persona then so did Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames and Harvey Keitel. None of those characters caused the actor to stretch himself. Travolta did a better job of acting outside his typical character IMHO but it certainly wasn't an Oscar worth performance.
