Hawaii legislators in both the House and Senate agree that it's time to end an exemption that allows police officers to legally have sex with prostitutes.
A bill cracking down on prostitution originally would have gotten rid of the exemption but then, last month,
restored the exemption after lobbying efforts by Hawaii police officers.
Police said vice officers needed the legal protection for their undercover work with pimps and prostitutes.
Police did not say how often or if they took advantage of the loophole.
Legislators now want to remove the prostitution exemption for police. On Thursday, an amended bill was passed out of the state's House Judicial Committee, the
Associated Press reports.
The House and Senate are still negotiating on a final version of the bill. Once they vote on it, Gov. Neil Abercrombie must sign the bill to make it law, the AP reports.
