That sounds like a loaded question to have 200 mph and safely in the same question.

On a closed course with helmet and leathers on is as safe as it gets on motorcycle.

As far as the top speed of the bikes The advertised top speed of a stock 2005 R 1 is 179 mph .

The word Safely realy doesnt belong attached to a motorcycle going over say the legal speed limit does it ?

Yes it belongs. Otherwise leathers and helmet wouldn't be worn.
I jumped on a slight newer one with just a helmet and twisted down! I should get some hides on if I feel the need to do that more often.
My thinking was that maybe a stock susp. Isn't really set for going over 170 safely if done often.
Thats why I asked.

Thanks slick.

It is quite the rush . The stock set up has lots of adjustments and i think is fairly adequate for most riders and speeds .

Every couple of years the bikes get more advanced lighter and faster .

I was just reading up on the 2015 R1 It has 200 HP stock and sounds truly awesome .

Be safe what ever your gona ride and take care

I have had my Yamaha cruiser up to 115 on I10 west of Beorne, had a bit more throttle but started feeling paranoid for state troopers.

Had a Challenger RT up to 130, but it was on a two lane blacktop with too many curves, entrances, and traffic to try any faster. That really had the pulse up.

I think it was more to do with the what-if? factor than the speed. I really started to realize the speed and road type were totally incompatible.

If I knew that I10 was 'open' for quite some distance, I would like to push the car to 150 just for the feel and thrill. A stock 5.7 needs room to attain top speed, running the Texas mile down in Beeville would be nice but I don't think the car would achieve much over 130 in current form.

200 on two wheels - that's nudging my definition of insanity, but then I was told the same for doing 115 on a cruiser.

Let us know how it goes.

I had just got on I 45 N just past The Woodlands going toward Conroe & a very wide, low car with side air scoop got in my mirror. A nice RED Ferrari. Well boyz time to run, I hit the throttle, I was impressed the $200K car stayed with me. My little rear engine German unit will run 185 or so. We hit 150 MPH. The Red little # didn't pass me but just ran with me. I said time to head back to base, I was pulling off 45, as I waved to the dude WITH HIS KID in the passenger seat & low and behold there was a white car on the Red Ferrari's tail.. and sure as shit on the door it said Sheriff... Yes time to head back to base...LOL I am sure that dude ended up on a trailer & a ride to redeem his coupon the nice officer gave him.

Default 200 MPH on the ground

I have had the good fortune to drive, ride and fly cars, motorcycles, airplanes and boats. It was always fun to see big numbers on the speedo and then came radar and gps. It quickly became apparent that what the speedo said, the radar said and the gps said didn't always agree. In general speedometers tend to be optimistic. On all of the Jap bikes I have owned they are wildly off. Using a certified police radar gun I found the bike's speedo was 10 to 20 mph over what the radar said. Some cars could be off the same amount, but generally it was 5 to 10 mph different. In the airplanes I have flown indicated airspeed only reads the same as ground speed if you are at sea level and there is no wind. I have seen a 50 knot head wind and tail wind. So flying at 135 knots indicated going with the wind I had a 185 knot ground speed then I turned the airplane around into the wind I had a 85 knot ground speed. Flying 100 miles down wind only took little more than 30 minutes. The return flight home took more than an hour to go the same distance. BUT buzzing some friends house 10 feet over their roof at 200 mph was funnn,!!!!!!!!!!
