I recently traveled through several countries that are considered Democratic Socialist -- Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Iceland, and Finland. Higher taxes than the U.S. but better benefits. I can't say that I performed a representative sample but the people I talked to like the system. Pay more for more security. And the poverty rates of those countries are lower than that in the U.S. I am not pushing Democratic Socialism but also not condemning it.

As for jobs with upward mobility. After I "retired" I went to work for a home improvement store for a year. Let's just say that the majority of the people in the store had very little hope of moving upward. Maybe to department head but that was it. They did not have a multitude of dependents. These are good people but limited for various reasons as to why they could not hope for "better" jobs.

I am in the opposite corner.

The personal earned income tax rate has lowered my taxable income quite a bit, putting more of my earned income into my pocket.

The corporate cuts are equally substantial. Our business has been able to upgrade machinery as well as hiring a new young man to train.

The embargoes have affect us to a degree. Our material and tooling cost are up because we are now buying more American. But that will level off.

I’m sure three are those who feel the Government could make better use of my money.

Well, I am 73 and have no desire to “retire”. From what I see of friends who have, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.
