The track record at Churchill still stands. The one at Belmont still stands, is also the dirt wired record time, and may well never be broken. But the most impressive fact if that race was that each quarter mile was run faster than the proceeding quarter of a mile — for all six quarters. Absolutely unheard of.

That was true of the 1973 Kentucky Derby, but NOT the Belmont. He had to slow down as he went the first 3/4 of a mile in 1:09 4/5, which is fast enough to win most throughbred stakes races these days. He finished in 2:24 flat, which is obviously just a BIT slower than his 1st 3/4...still an amazing feat.
