Lubbock: Most of the nice motels are off of Loop 289 South and West. Stay away from I-27.

Almost every area you pick is going to have a great hotel in that area...If you pick a highehigher grade hotel type you will be fine. MAKE SURE YOU PRE BOOK. Lubbock is still the only town that I had 10 no shows and last minute cancels and still saw 6 people...That was many moons ago still Lubbock hold the most number of nos in my phone to date...But also many great guys that hobby..Just warning you to not get discouraged with the no Fuck offs because you should have many yes ones that make it worth while

The layout of Lubbock is interesting (I'm down from DFW on business). You have the Overton (think The Hilton off of 4th street) if you want a 4-star hotel. Or you could stay at the MCM or courtyard Marriott if you want a suite type place.

As for the layout, the further you go South the nicer it is (start around 82nd street). However I haven't really seen any place that looked unsafe (by appearance only I mean).

In Lubbock you will want to stay at any of the hotels on the west and SW side of town. Stay away from anything around I-27 and the eastern part of south Loop 289.
