I try not to drink too many soft drinks, but do have that occasional carbonation crave....I love Sonic's vanilla dr. pepper!

Long time ago I use to drink a six-12 pack of soda a day. It was my coffee, I hate the taste of coffee. We can talk about the bad that sugar, fructose syrup has but there is more. It's carbonated and carbonated drinks actually restrict blood flow through your capillaries. Also just like coffee, it has caffeine which supresses REM (Rapid Eye Movement). REM is the state that you dream. The more you drink, less REM, less good sleep, and thus tired when you wake up. So we drink coffee/soda more often to wake up. Its a bad cycle. My soda drinking caused some issues but no longer. I drink maybe 1-2 a week unless drinking with liquor. Body actually gets dependant on it so slowly taper down your intake. Water is also the best thing, helps your body absorb nutrients and plus if you drink enough it brings down your appetite.

For dietary considerations, there is essentially no difference between using high fructose corn syrup and cane suger. Every form of sugar must be reduced to glucose before the human body can utilize it. Fructose (also called levulose and fruit sugar) and glucose (also called dextrose) are chemically identical, differing only by their structures. A glucose molecule is a mirror image of fructose so the fructose has to be inverted to glucose. Cane sugar is sucrose (a disaccharide) which is made up of 1 glucose molecule and 1 fructose molecule. It's metabolized by first splitting sucrose into fructose and glucose and then inversion of the fructose molecule. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with fructose. High fructose corn syrup is almost the same concentration of glucose and fructose as cane sugar. As far as calories go, it really makes no difference although fructose is sweeter than sucrose and can therefore be used in smaller amounts.

"Waiter, there's an isomer in my Dr Pepper!"

My anti-HFCS stance is based on taste alone. However, I'm 99% sure that I couldn't tell the difference between the two if I were in a blind taste test. Especially since the Stewart's above has HFCS as its sweetener, and I still love it! I suppose I just like the *idea* of soda made with regular sugar.

In my humble opinion there are only two drinks in this world that are any good.

Water and massive amounts of beer.

Especially if your friend brings over several cases of real expensive foreign beer and his new stripper girl friend late at night. Again just my opinion.

The only problem with water is that it dilutes the massive amounts of beer that I enjoy so much.

My daughter has been sending me research articles on the evils of "sodas". One of the bigest problems is that the phosphoric acid in soda has been shown to cause bone deterioration.

They say tea is actually pretty good for you (anti-oxidants, etc). I've pretty much switched to tea. I especially like the blackberry tea at Chili's the mango tea at Fridays and the strawberry tea at California Pizza Kitchen.

7-Up, Sierra Mist, and Sprite are my favorites. For some reason I've always had this mental thing about sticking with clear sodas, maybe cuz I'm worried about the possibility of there ever being something in the dark ones I can't see, idk. If I was to guess, I'd say I average drinking about 2-3 sodas/wk.
