Donald Trump's 3 positions on abortion in 3 hours

(CNN)Donald Trump sought to clarify, walk back, then seemingly reverse his position on punishing women who seek abortion procedures -- should they be legally banned -- over the course of a few hours Wednesday.

Here's what he said about it in just one day:

'Some form of punishment'

The GOP presidential front-runner's mad scramble began a little after he told MSNBC's Chris Matthews that abortion, if outlawed, should carry "some form of punishment."

When Matthews asked if that penalty should apply specifically to the woman, Trump replied: "Yes."

But he didn't elaborate on its nature except to say that men should not be held responsible.


The backlash was fast, angry and bipartisan.

Dawn Laguens from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund called Trump "flat-out dangerous," while Bernie Sanders ("Shameful") and Hillary Clinton ("Horrific and telling") tweeted their condemnations.

On the GOP side, John Kasich and Ted Cruz, who both favor strict anti-abortion laws, criticized Trump from the right, with the Texas senator accusing him of having damaged the cause, saying the billionaire "demonstrated that he hasn't seriously thought through the issues."

'This issue is unclear'

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks sent in a statement from Trump to reporters: "This issue is unclear and should be put back into the states for determination. Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions, which I have outlined numerous times."

Criticism, though, continued to come.

'The woman is a victim'

By a little before 5 p.m., Trump released another explanation -- marking an almost complete about-face.

"If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman," Trump said in a statement.

"The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb," Trump said. "My position has not changed -- like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions."

It's not embarrassing for the United States. It's only embarrassing to Donald Trump. Obama was an embarrassment to the United States the way he trapes around the world trying to influence other nations way of life. Besides Abortion is one of those tricky little issues that no one ever gets it right anyway.

One other thing to keep in mind. We now have several generations of young women who were taught that a "fetus" is nothing more than a clump of cells, and right up until the moment it pops out and takes it's first breath, it is not a real human being and can be destroyed on a whim.

Organizations like Planned Parenthood fight tooth and nail against any educating of women as to what exactly is going on in their womb. Seeing a "baby" at 4 months on an ultrasound and hearing the young woman say......."that sure looks like a tiny Baby", could bankrupt the billion dollar "abortion industry".

It seems we are for education in just about every facet of life except educating young women about what is really happening when they realize they are pregnant. Keep them ignorant, and keep the abortion factories in business.

I tend to be pretty liberal on most social issues. But abortion, the way we use it in The United States, ( i.e., birth control), is something that any body should see as a barbaric practice.

Sure the United States has always tried to influence other nations and Obama is in line with that. What do you think he went to Cuba for? Also why do you think United States has Military Bases all over the World? On the issue of Abortion ya dam right it's a tricky issue. No matter what ones view is on abortion, they'll upset lots and lots of people. Trump fumbled the ball on abortion. That's the definitive reason now why people shouldn't support him? Clinton fumbled the ball on Benghazi. She's even being investigated for it, but most Americans will still give her a free pass and look for her to be nominated and elected president.
