I thought your post was refreshing in its candor. I'm sure many hobbyists have reflected upon those realizations as you. Having been a member of the boards for some time, I rarely read such a well thought-out post. Thank you.

I've personally contemplated your burning (pun lol) question of STD prevalence and have done similar research, which also led me to CDC.org. My query was specific to HPV. All topics are subject to a bit of confusion, but Camille Fox's assessment is consistent with the CDC, who estimate that 79 MILLION people are currently infected with HPV. The one thing to remember is that it's just a simple virus whose sole purpose is to reproduce and has evolved to defy our immune system. It has adopted an elegant tactic of host transferal by way of sexual contact--through mouth and genitals. HSV1 and HSV2 are caused by same virus. It just knows to hang around the area where it was transferred, increasing its likelihood of being transmitted. The classification has more to do with location.

According to the CDC, 21,000 annual cancers can be attributable to HPV. I consider that a small number considering the population of sexually active individuals in the US. Recent articles suggest the number is inflated to be conservative; research on this correlation are apparently spotty. Nevertheless, it's a nice statistic for an OB/GYN to cite, in order to tack on a potentially unnecessary pap smear, padding the bill, as well as securing a nice referral fee from the test lab. HSV currently holds the record of most people infected at any one time but its mantra is "Why kill my host, when I can just chill and cause a minor inconvenience (sores) to propagate?"

I suppose HPV weighs more on us socially than biologically. The OB/GYN, the lab, Abreva, Campho Phneique, the HPV vaccine, among others, capitalize on the social stigma. Those actors feed a nearly non-existent flame--to make money--and survive (just like the virus).

JacobJ--I don't think it's the STD. I think you were more hurt that she actually admitted to you she's had unprotected sex with another. Some of us believe that level of contact elevates our trust with that person. Your trust has been compromised. You thought she cared for you. You made a painful discovery.

You are not alone in this experience.

Everything I said was especially related to HSV (herpes). HPV, is a different story.

When you, as a male, go get a STD panel, you are NOT tested for HPV. Some strains of HPV can cause papules (both in men and women), but they are neither painful not fluid filled like the ones caused by the herpes virus.

HPV can cause cancer on men, but it's soooo rare, and it is usually on men who suffer some form of immunodeficiency (anal Pap smear can be performed if you are in this population). It CAN, much more commonly, cause cancer on women, but not always. That is not to say that it is not dangerous. Pap smear frequency recommendations had dropped for the "general" population recently (used to be yearly).

There is a vaccine for CERTAIN strains (some of the most dangerous ones) of HPV that is given to WOMEN up to a certain age. As sex workers, we can request to receive the vaccine even if outside the age window, but that's completely up to your physician.


Now... As far as this bareback talk... God... A search will yield lots of threads on the subject. The bottom line is: clients are barebacking SOMEONE. Girlfriends, wives, the civilian at the bar, etc. it's none of my business. I want none of it. Providers are barebacking someone: S/O, another client, a girlfriend, a guy at the bar, who the hell knows. It's up to you what/who you want to take home.

Do you know what STD tests are good for? So you can started on whatever medication you need to get started ASAP and stop spreading whatever you have. It is not, and it has never been, a free pass to have unprotected sex. That pass is something YOU choose to give yourself.

I get a test at least once a year (the last two weeks ago - negative for HSV 1 & 2 and all the other nasties). You really need to educate yourself on this subject!
