I don't have any particular democratic/republican tendencies, and would probably classify myself as agnostic, but given that even most christians I meet believe in evolution and global warming, I find the following very alarming - the one thing I hate is stupidity because it is so incurable:
See
http://blog.chron.com/rickperry/2011...-gop-hopefuls/
and this quote from that article
Only one major Republican candidate has dared to challenge his party on these views. Last month, Jon Huntsman, a former U.S. ambassador to China and Utah governor, tweeted: “To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy.”
Huntsman also said, “The minute that the Republican Party becomes the … anti-science party, we have a huge problem. We lose a whole lot of people who would otherwise allow us to win the election in 2012.”
There are many other similar articles on this subject.
There is a staggering proportion of the US population who do not believe in evolution - i.e. there is a staggering proportion of the US population who are uneducated about science and/or are inherently anti science.
So what choice is there for an edicated, scientifically literate Republican? If somebody is this stupid about basic science, what hope is there that they have a grasp on something more complex like economics? Or international politics?
I only hope that they are merely playing to the crowd - but if so, does the US want that kind of person to be president?
It's an uphill struggle convincing my fellow europeans that most americans are intelligent and educated and sophisticated and cultured.

Agreed. Trying to prove there isn't a God is just as futile as trying to prove there is a God.

What I find funny is that if people say they talk to god, there is nothing wrong with them, but if someone talks to the devil they are insane.

You guys must not know what atheism is...we don't have to prove anything, we're not trying to prove a negative. There's no evidence that a supreme being exists...we don't need proof, the believers are the ones who are required to prove stuff, not us...
Agnostics, especially those who preach the whole "the human mind is incapable of knowing if God exists or not" thing, are the ones desperately waiting for the proof to make up their minds, atheists have made up their minds, and if the situation changes will adapt accordingly...

We don't know. There are loads of theories, but no definitive proof. Unlike believers, we choose to say "we don't know, but here are some theories we're trying to prove" rather than saying "God created us, we don't have any proof, but we're still right and you're wrong"...

Agreed. Some of us like playing both sides of the street!
Good article. Thought provoking. But the one about foxholes. I would think that if I had a bullet that had been shot and going over my head, that I would pray to something, anything, in the hopes that it might do something/anything to help.
Color me ignorant.
Still it was fun to read something provocative about religion (or the lack of it) on a Sunday morning, while not in church. Some very good responses, too!!!

Why would any near death experience make you believe in God?
The other guy is just a bad aim.
