Agree with Paven on this, In-n-Out, hands down!

P. Terry's is where I go for a very good substitute, but still not In-n-Out. Mighty Fine is third place and 5 Guy's fourth place for me. If 5 Guys did something about their buns it might move up the list.

let me ad one more Calif. Burger place....
Tommy's Original Burgers
"On May 15, 1946, a young Tommy Koulax introduced Los Angeles to a hamburger with gusto. Sixty four years later, L.A.’s love affair with his chili-topped creation is still going strong. Beginning with a ramshackle little stand on the corner of Beverly and Rampart Boulevards in Los Angeles, Tommy has fed an estimated fifty million Southern Californians." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2bUsfuEo1U..
I ate at the location, Beverly & Rampart --- (Yes the Rampart Division from Dragnet!!) many times.. in the DAY LIGHT HOURS... I aint crazy... there are many location in Southern Calif... Be daring & hit the above location....

No way nomuff!!! Thank you for reminding me of Tommy's....my hangout from age 15 to 18. You just sent me through memory lane. Yes, Tommy's double chili cheese burger, chili dog, fries and coke, plus inexpensive to boot.

In fact I love these burgers so much, any client taking me to lunch there will get a good discount on dessert.

Never had a burger at Champps in Houston but I am certainly willing to give it a shot. Care to join me?

By the same token, I have enjoyed countless burgers through the years at Lankford's Grocery. Yum!

The burgers at Goode's Taqueria (across the street from Goode Company BBQ on Kirby Dr.) aren't bad either!

As for Austin, P. Terry's and Hill's (on S. Congress) offers the best burgers in the city. IMHO

In n Out's good for places that have them. In Dallas, it would have to be Keller's; Harry Hines or NW Hwy @ Abrams.

No one can resist an In-N-Out urge. NoMuff added Tommy's which taste great and the chili helps when one has been consuming alkiehaul.
