if the seat was held by a Republican who won by 20% in 2018, then is lost to a Democrat, that is a HUGE deal. if the Republican won by 3% in 2018, and the seat is taken by a Democrat, by a 2% margin, that is not newsworthy.
Trump is obviously worried and finds it extremely meaningful that a Republican take the seat.

If it meant nothing to Trump he wouldn't waste his time campaigning for him and sending Donald Jr. and Pence to also campaign for him.

As was pointed out, Obama lost in spectacular fashion during his first midterms and many of the special elections in his first term, but won in 2012.

Prior to the 2018 midterms Republicans lost a number of high profile special elections. They could be interpreted as a sign of what was to come.
This is a single election. If the Republican candidate loses in a highly red district, it will be to me another warning shot fired across the bow for Trump in 2020. Certainly not an omen of impending doom.

He wants house seats. He’s not worried about his election. As I stated before, Obama lost more seats than Trump during his first term. He got re-elected. And Obama endorsed some losers.

Trump won NC by 3,67% in 2016. Mark Harris, Republican, defeated Don McCready, Democrat, 139,246 to 138,341. Allegations of fraud in the election prevented certification and the NC Board of Elections called for a new vote.
Much money has been poured into this race by both sides. Everyone who says it won't be a huge upset if McCready wins is correct but from the emphasis put on the race by Trump is must mean a great deal to him.

If this guy wins, will it mean “nothing to trump?” Maybe if he loses - Trump hates losers. But your comment is naive and comical.

Here are the criteria for consideration for a Rhodes Scholarship. There is no mention of athletics:

I think Hot Rod was making a funny by calling it a roads scholarship.
