As much as I love the Llano, Lockhart, and Taylor places, I still think the Rudy's on 183 and Duval is pretty close behind with their brisket and ribs. Just don't get the lean cut, go for moist or cutters choice.

I took a business partner to Bone Daddy's one time 2 yrs ago. He was visiting from Kansas City and b4 we arrived at BD's he said "well of course, I know a thing or two about BBQ".........anyway, when we walked in there were 3 waitresses bending over the hostess stand like they were looking for a dropped contact lense. He still talks about that day.

If the weather is ok, I like to take visitors to the Salt Lick in Dripping Springs. It's a beautiful 2 beer drive. It's BYOB. Hang out under the shade trees listening to live music and drink your beer. Go inside when your ready to eat. Good atmosphere.

yes by all means, lets load up the clan from California and drive 20 minutes in traffic for an inferior BBQ experience when otherwise it would take us a 25 minute drive for world class BBQ. Point taken.

This topic has been covered, actually it seems to come up every few months.

Here are links to a couple previous versions of this thread

I've eaten what people call "BBQ" in some other non-BBQ states. Its a disgrace to even call that stuff BBQ. If you'll aren't up for a 20-30 minute drive, then by all means take them to something in town.

For a local list of convenient, run in there any day of the week BBQ joints...(in no particular order): Rudy's (several locations), County Line on 2222 (very convenient if you are off 360), and Pok-E-Jos (some of my favorite sausage in and around town).

While you're at it, take them to Taco Cabana for Tex Mex!

Seriously, though, the Salt Lick has a food trailer on MLK at Rio Grande and I had one of the greatest smoked steak sandwiches in my life there. Quite pleasantly surprised. And I wasn't kidding about Poke E Jo's. Shit! Rudy's is pretty decent, too! Try the Prime Rib. Damned good.

Odd that nobody's mentioned Artz Rib House on S. Lamar. Country style ribs also worth soiling yourself with!

Or, you COULD man up and take your peeps for a ride in the Hill Country and pretend you're in Austin... hope that isn't hijacking the thread, bro!

Drive by it often on the way to the Lake Home, I too have not stop in, but I constantly notice the traffic load of cars parked there on numerous trips going by......I too will drop in.

Yeah man .... What BBQ? I love their menu.....at the very top it reads "And for the other reason you are here"

The babes are some of the best stock that Austin has to offer....I don't go there for the BBQ, I venture there to DREAM.

If I am wrong correct me, but the original place was indeed in Tanglewood and I believe that is the same place that they still do the actual Cooking.....but is sold also in Lexington....

I agree with Muellers and Coopers....

I remember the days of Kruez Market when the butcher knives were chained to the wooden tables, only cheese, bread, crackers, salt/pepper mix, soda, beer were the only complements that you get with the beef etc on the red paper, no forks, eat it all with you hands only. Made National News .....LOL CNN style and also in Texas Monthly.....

Sister and Brother got in huge disagreement on the business once ole man Smitty died, fighting over money as normal, daughter open Smitty's in the old place and son move out north on 183 and continued the name of Kruez Market.

Salt Lick is good but..........

The time it takes to drive across Austin to one place or another or drive 25 minutes south to Lockhart and have three excellent choices.....

And Nugget you might have a hard time thinking outside of the window, you probably should just go to Taco Bell and get a taco...

Lockhart is overrated imho. Great to be sure but on a good day, you can find as good if not better anywhere in Texas.

Go to Vitak's in Waco for a gutpack
Check out the steam table at Mikeska's in Columbus
Pecan smoked anything at Dozier's in Fulshear
Moist brisket at Joe Cotten's in Robstown
BBQ Free Range Duck -- or ANYTHING -- at Goode Co. in Htown.

And of course, nothing comes close to mine!

So we can all expect you to send out invitations to your next "TailGate" right? Agree everyone's "mine" is the best....

I Never paid any attention until they made #1 in Texas Monthly 08 even though I drove US77 through there many times over the years. Now they are hidden off the road in down town Lexington and they cook right there in a covered area out back. A very interesting experience getting there at 8am on a Saturday and seeing people from all over the country lining up for the opening. Their Brisket is 2nd to none, every thing else a notch below but still good. You gotta try it sometime.

Who could forget the knives chained to the tables in Kreuz before they remodeled just past 1978. Somewhere along the line they got famous, and it changed forever. I read today that over a quarter million people per year are now estimated to travel to Lockhart just for BBQ. Too much media exposure.

First part...learn something new everyday.....

Second part.....totally agree, that's one of the many reason's I recommend Chisholm Trail over Kruez and Smittys....gets back to the basics..

Now if you are thinking of having the wait staff of Bone Daddy's at any of the outside area of Austin BBQ places.....well it ain't going to happen...
