:-) when i was living in a similar place like that i was always a sucker for hard cash ;-). I had people giving me cash and loved it. (Maybe that brought some ideas....hmm.....now i am an escort ....just kidding.......entrepreneurial self ....big grin.....). Being an ex Punk i never really cared for luxury products (well that has changed.. )

I do collect all these soap boxes too, and i have to say, i have so many soaps that i did not need to buy soap anymore since years. Its hilarious how long that stuff lasts. I love these little soaps!

Though I can see that, believe it's perfectly understandable and certainly don't judge it - I can't say we had the same experience.

I was a child, not yet 12, and wouldn't take money from anyone. My mother's personality wasn't one to take hard cash from random or known people. Granted we were receiving help from the system, so yes we were receiving tax payer dollars. I suppose there was a fear that we would 'owe' them something that would put us in a position to be taken advantage of as a result of our poverty. My mother remains a devoted Catholic, and so her moral structure reflects that in many subtle ways.

The products the shelters provided were of poor quality, and generally harsh on the hair and dried out the skin. It was nice when those little bottles of hair products, moisturizers and soap donations came in. And being so young and easily impressed - I thought it was pretty cool

I know that it might not seem like it is really something that is a necessity, but many of the women in these shelters often lack self-esteem, which is understandable, and often they look in the mirrors and no longer see themselves as the beautiful women they are. And sometimes a little thing, like that their roots are showing, or they don’t have mascara can really be that tipping that can bring them even further down.
I guess in the grand scheme of things it sounds like a silly donation, but I have often loaded up on sale boxes of many different hair colorings, as well as mascara, nail polishes, make-up, and the like and donated them. Sometimes just covering their roots up can give them a fresh outlook on better days ahead.

Hell college students 'fall prey' to it. It's called a job. Making ends meet. Doing whatever it takes. Paying bills. Working a job you might not like.

I am not advocating going to homeless shelters but lets not bury our head in the sand in just what we are all doing around here.

One very good movie that explores your question is Water. Set in India, it deals with the plight of widows who were/are outcasts and abandoned. It is set in a home for widows and deals with their plight and how they survive.

I can relate to that. And i understand it very much. For me having hard cash as opposed to other donations meant a certain freedom in being decisive about my own fate. I can understand although the notion of taking gifts rather than money. I try to give money instead of gifts, except for close relatives (and my mother :-) - she cannot handle money well, so i rather buy her what she needs to not have the feeling it is wasted.....:-).....)

I think its a nice idea to give people such little gifts ! I am sure they love it. My skin is always sensitive , as i used to have neurodermatitis, and i don`t tolerate cheap products very well, so i would have been flattered if someone like you came along bringing me nice shampoos and body lotions

I think , no matter on the "how" its a good thing to help others and the variety of help is surely appreciated by many people.
