Yahtmaster, it probably depends where in MO you travel, but you can head south on hwy75 at Nebraska City, and maybe cross farther south. My guess is the other option would be to cross at Omaha on I80, and then work on major US Hwy south. Been a while since I drove truck, and used hwy 75 quite a bit, but also drove I 29 a lot. Didn't do much in Southern IA at all, so don't know too much about the roads there.

this is not good news

I was planning on leaving kc tomm and head to lincoln I do not know my way around very well out there so this could make for a very bad ordeal..The last few times I took I-29 not sure how else to get there!!

Finally got a chance to get down and look at the river all I can say is wow. Seeing photos on tv just doesnt compare to actually seeing it up close. It is terrible to say the very least.

There are a couple ways you could go. I think things should be fine to cross the Missouri at St Joseph Missouri, go west on Hwy 36 to Hwy 75. Go north on Hwy 75 to Nebraska City and then go west to Lincoln on Hwy 2. This brings you into Lincoln on the south side of town.

You could also go west of Kansas City on I 70 to Topeka and also head north on Hwy 75, and follow the above directions.

Another option would be to head north in Missouri and Iowa on Hwy 59, then go west on Hwy 92 to Council Bluffs, and you can catch I 80 there and go west on I 80 to Lincoln from there. Bottom line is by a road atlas, and check for road closings. Getting across the Missouri will get to be a challenge in a few days. Largest water release from the Gavins Point dam will start on Tuesday June 14, and will reach Omaha on Thursday or Friday.

I just talked to a friend of mine from lincoln and he said on hwy 2 that the water is getting really high that the blocks they have up don't look like it should hold much longer

Thanks for all your directions though I look forward to my trip I love the gentlemen I have met in lincoln...Hopefully this trip will be a good one

If you don't already know, the levee burst open this morning near Hamburg. I-29 will be closing within the next 24-48 hrs at best.

That is Hwy 2 on the Iowa side of the Missouri River. Like Elana says though, the levee broke, and I 29 will be closed from Rockport Missouri North. Hwy 2 will be open in Nebraska City from Hwy 75 west.

Here is a link to pictures of the flooding Missouri north up by Tekamah and Blair. The OPPD plant is the nuclear plant at Fort Calhoun. They expect they will have to close hwy 75 north of Fort Calhoun because of high water.

I just drove KC to Lincoln this afternoon and it was clear sailing all the way. Hwy 2 and I-29 is the spot to watch.

I didn't see any flooding or high water there today @ 2:30 pm. There were a lot of machines working on what looked like a second levy. Looks like I made it home just in time.
