I feel reasonably protected now. But technology moves so fast right now, I still wonder if I missed something.
That is exactly how I do and how I recommend for anybody, clients and providers, to do.

The truth is that anyone can get to you if you use a device you possess. The only safe method is a cash burner device with no stored personal data. Then, only your location is available, until you use login info, which links you to any other device that has used that info.

I use Chrome for everyday browsing and only browse ECCIE, P411, backpage and so on from Firefox to keep the cookies and other hidden files separate. So far, I think it works.

Separation of browsers and interests addressed on each is the best for me as well.

I don't know why or how but somebody that I had a session with like 6 years ago is on my suggested friends list and I haven't got a clue how my facebook made the connection.
My hobby email is separate and I use google voice. And it's just 1 provider that shows up and it was YEARS ago.

Look into Incognito browsing with Chrome. Only look at/log into hobby related material while browsing in Incognito and it will solve all that ails you.

edit: Reminds me in college when I was having lots of fun on Plenty of Fish. Consequently used that email when signing up for Facebook awhile back and all those people came flooding back. Too bad I'm not out there anymore to see if they're still up for that kind of fun these days after they're married, had kids, or whatever.

1) Find settings tab in internet browser. For me google chrome it is the top right.

2) Once in settings go to the "History" tab.

3)Click clear browsing data. (here it can vary. Google chrome pulls up a window to select what you want to clear. Sometimes you have to select each individually)

4) once in history make sure to clear "cookies and other site plug ins" you can do browsing history, cached image files, and downloaded files if you want especially if you have people that want to snoop around but the cookies and site plug in is what stores the info to suggest things to buy or people to know.

pm if confused, i am wrong, an asshole, this is unnecessary, or you need more help. My internet safety is just as important as hobbying safety
I appreciate that you're trying to help here, but this is simply not the right advice. It won't hurt, but it's wrought with inaccuracies. Clearing cookies won't prevent tracking, and clearing cache is pointless (for this purpose). Key strokes are not logged unless you have malware.

incognito mode is great for some things but it will not cure all that OP is worried about. It won't prevent tracking or anything else. all it really does is keep sites visited out of the readily-displayed history (but not all history) and maintain a session-specific cookie set that is dumped when the session ends. But that really doesn't do much if you log into sites while in incognito mode.

your best bet is to never do anything hobby related on a cell phone or a windows computer. if you can't be bothered with that then use a separate phone/computer for hobby calls, texts, emails, websites, etc. never mix your personal information with your hobby information on any device. the rest is like taking a garden hose to a 3-alarm house fire. sure, it's helping. but not really.

I've been having the same problem for a year, so I appreciate the possible solutions everyone mentioned in this thread. I don't really know anyone well in the hobby, so I didn’t have someone to ask what's going on! My LinkedIn page has my handle only, and yet it brings up my high school and college classmates that are on my FB friends list. I use two entirely different names, my real name is on FB of course, that's strictly real life. My LinkedIn is strictly for hobby. But it's getting all mixed up. One of friends from high school recognized me and wanted to be one of my connections on LinkedIn. I had no idea what to tell her about my name and sexual innuendo. I'm afraid other people will recognize me too. If LinkedIn reccomends them to me, I'm sure I'm reccomended to them too.
And I don't use Google much.

I may have to delete one of them. I also get providers and hobbyist under "people you may know" on both sites. And on twitter, they send me tweets from escorts worldwide, even though I don't tweet or follow anyone! How does twitter know what I do? And if I do online shopping or look anything up, I get tons of spam on the things I bought or just glanced at. The computer spies on us!

I wonder if that's why I have no issues. I've not included that in my RW profile, and I'm sure in my early days of hobbying (well before social media and burner phones) I used my cell phone from time to time. That's been a long time ago for me, but I could see how someone with more recent history might have their phone number in some provider/client contact list, even if they only did it a few times, before they knew better.

Facebook and Google think we should share log ins, phone numbers, GPS locations, employers, birthdays....just get it all out there for everyone.

Everyone who has ever sent you an email, or received one from you, still has that info in their email service.

So when that random person from your past joins linkedin or fb, all of that info gets sucked into the databases. And then, the databases match everything up from everybody else who has ever joined, and boom, you get friend suggestion from randoms from years ago.

Your hobby email should never be used for real world stuff, duh, and a burner phone.

That's exactly what it is. Do not share your personal phone number on Facebook. The minute you do that, all the contacts in your phone gets added into the FB recommendations, if the contacts have also added their phone numbers in FB.

So remember, its just not the hobbyists seeing the providers profiles, but its also the other way around...Stay Safe my friends.

I keep my facebook page public. I post things I find enlightening or interesting.
I avoid putting person pictures and posts, thought.
